Henrietta and Eliza Huszti, both 32, were found in the River Dee in Aberdeen over three weeks after they went missing – the family of the twins have provided a new update

The family of two sisters whose bodies were found in a river after going missing have issued a major new update.

Henrietta and Eliza Huszti, both 32, were found in the River Dee in Aberdeen on January 31, over three weeks after they disappeared. Police said their deaths were not suspicious, and later confirmed their cause of death was drowning.

Dad Miklos Huszti, from Hungary, was left heartbroken after being told of the tragedy. He told Hungarian media he “had never felt such pain before”, adding that Edit – who was the third in the set of triplets – “completely collapsed” when she was informed of their deaths.

A JustGiving page has since been launched to help the family financially. It was launched with an initial target of £1,500 – but after a huge outpouring of support, the total is now over £8,100 and rising. Now, the organisers have announced that the family have received £7,200 so far after processing fees, and confirmed the page will remain open for any further donations until Tuesday 4 March.

In an emotional update on the GoFundMe page, organiser Anita Vida said: “I want to take a moment to sincerely thank everyone who has donated or offered support over the past three weeks. Your generosity and kindness have made a tremendous difference.

“The fundraising page will remain open until March 4th as this is the shortest period allowed by the platform.
“However, in order to provide financial assistance to the family as soon as possible, I was able to withdraw the funds on Monday. After processing fees of the page, the family received nearly £7,200. Thank you again for your incredible support, it truly means the world to the family during this difficult time.”

The women’s disappearance sparked a major search at the start of the year. They were last seen in the early hours of January 7, when they crossed the Victoria Bridge and headed towards Aberdeen Boat Club. The siblings, who were from a set of triplets, had visited the area the day before and also texted their landlady to say they were giving up their Aberdeen flat.

Henrietta was found near Queen Elizabeth Bridge on the morning of January 31. Officers continued searching and later found Eliza in an area of the river near to the Victoria Bridge. Speaking at the time, Superintendent David Howieson said: “Our thoughts remain with the Huszti family and we are keeping them fully updated following these recoveries. We know how much of an impact this has had in Aberdeen and much further afield and I would like to thank everyone who has assisted with our investigation.”
