West Ham revealed on Saturday that Michail Antonio was in a “stable” condition following his sickening car crash and that he was communicating in hospital – and they have now provided a full update on his injuries

Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following his horror Ferrari crash on Saturday – with West Ham confirming he will remain in hospital in London to be monitored.

The footballing world was left stunned this weekend after news that Antonio had been caught up in a sickening car crash, with images of his crushed supercar in woodlands near Theydon Bois, Essex causing concern.

His club later revealed the player was in a “stable” condition and that he was communicating following the accident. The Premier League outfit have now provided a full update on his injuries.

A statement on Sunday afternoon said: “West Ham United can confirm Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following a road traffic accident on Saturday afternoon. Michail will continue to be monitored in hospital over the coming days.

“Everyone at the Club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news, as well as extending a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michail in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and the medical team who continue to aid him in his recovery. The Club will provide further updates when appropriate.”

The Hammers previously said of the 34-year-old: “West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in the Essex area,” the club said in a statement.

“Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital. At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family.”

Antonio has received an outpouring of support since news of his crash circulated, with the Premier League saying in a statement: “The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the Premier League are also with Antonio, his family, friends and all at West Ham.”

Meanwhile, Gary Lineker paused Match of the Day coverage to make a tribute to the player. Former Reading team-mate Jobi McAnuff also sent his well wishes to the veteran star. “Thoughts and prayers to Michail’s family,” he wrote on Instagram.

This is not the first time Antonio has been caught up in a car crash. On Christmas Day in 2019 he crashed his £210,000 Lamborghini into a front garden while dressed as a snowman.

He has been an integral player for West Ham since joining the Hammers in 2015. He’s made a total of 323 appearances and scored 83 times – playing a crucial role in their UEFA Conference League win in 2023.
