Met Office weather forecasters have told Brits living in 59 different areas that they should consider preparing essential items as wind warnings have been issued for the Easter weekend

The Met Office is urging people in 59 parts of the UK to prepare essential items.

The national weather agency has issued two weather warnings for the Easter weekend as wind speeds could reach a staggering 90mph at times. The first yellow warning covers parts of North Wales, northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland, from 6pm on Saturday to midday on Sunday.

The Met Office says delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely, and there is a chance of power cuts too. Some buildings could be damaged, while there is also a small chance of injuries “from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties”.

The warning states that wind gusts could reach 90mph in western Scotland, with 60mph to 70mph on the cards more widely. It also urged people to prepare for power cuts by gathering “essential items” as well as torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack.

A second yellow warning for wind lasts all day on Sunday. It covers Orkney and Shetland, where wind speeds could reach 85mph. Again, people are urged to prepare essential items due to the risk of power cuts.

The warning adds: “Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.”
