Some 39 areas in the UK are expecting snowfall as temperatures continue to plummet and the Met Office issues further weather warnings amid first cold snap of the season

As the temperature continues to plummet, the Met Office is predicting 39 areas across the UK could be set for snow on Wednesday morning.

There are weather warnings in place for snow and ice after snow fell across parts of Scotland on Tuesday, November 18 – but more could yet be in store as yellow and amber warnings are in place as the week goes on.

Northern Scotland is subject to a yellow warning from 6pm on Tuesday to 9pm on Thursday, with the same applying from 12am on Wednesday until 11.59pm on Thursday for much of north-east England and Yorkshire.

According to the forecaster as much as 25cm of snow could fall from Wednesday, November 19 with many areas not expecting snow also being told to brace themselves for freezing temperatures and icy conditions.

Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “Cold Arctic air from the north is firmly in charge of the UK’s weather, bringing the first notable cold snap of this autumn and giving an early taste of winter weather.

“As a result, winter hazards are likely through the next few days, with snow and ice a particular hazard, and the coldest conditions likely on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Wintry showers will affect areas exposed to the brisk northerly wind, in particular Northern Ireland, south-west Wales, south-west England, north-east England and across the northern half of Scotland.

“Whilst not all places will see lying snow, where showers are most frequent accumulations of 2-5cm will be possible. On higher ground in Scotland 15-20cm could accumulate and potentially as much as 15-25cm over the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds.”

The Met Office have warned that the cold weather conditions are likely to cause disruption.

Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous and they have urged Brits to ‘keep yourself and your family safe’ by prepping for the storms.
