Thunderstorms are possible in some regions on Sunday as the Met Office forecasts heavy rain for many following on from a record-breaking heatwave this week
The Met Office says thunderstorms are on the cards in some parts of the UK this weekend, with heavy rain expected for many.
It comes following the record-breaking May heatwave which saw temperatures rise above 35C in southern areas. The Met Office has already been forced to issue a number of weather warnings for thunderstorms during the heatwave – and now it would appear that more could follow.
Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said Sunday brings the “prospect of more showery outbreaks of rain, predominantly across more northern areas”. However, she added: “Anywhere across the south-west is likely to see a few showers.”
Within these showers, she said there was a “risk of thunderstorms across the far north as well”. She added: “Some of these showers will push into more eastern areas, but I think most of eastern England will see very little in the way of rain – but more in the way of cloud.”
The Met Office’s forecast issued this morning said rain, heavy at times, will move across Scotland and Northern Ireland from the west on Saturday before reaching Wales and England. “Warm sunny spells” are expected in England before the rain arrives. “A mixture of sunny spells and showers” should follow on Sunday, it adds.
Areas facing rain on Sunday
- Scotland
- Northern Ireland
- North of England
- Wales
- South-west of England
- Midlands
The Met Office expects highs of 29C in southern areas on Saturday, and highs of 24C on Sunday. 25C highs are on the cards in northern areas on Saturday, with 21C to follow on Sunday.
BBC’s weather forecast for this weekend
The BBC predictions line up with what the Met Office has said. The BBC forecast states: “Northern areas will see a band of rain move in from the west tomorrow, turning patchier in east Scotland. Mostly sunny elsewhere, but cloud and showers in the west later. Very warm in the south-east.
“Sunday will be cooler with variable cloud, although it will be cloudier across the west. There will be the risk of showers throughout the day, these heaviest in the far north.
“Monday will see cloud and outbreaks of rain push into the UK from the south-west.”
