The Met Office has a weather warning in place today as fog will be dense – and reduce visibility to less than 100m in places, particularly across the Dorset and Hampshire coasts

Drivers will this morning face “tricky conditions” on the roads in some parts of the country due to dense fog.

There is a weather warning in place for fog as the Met Office believes visibility will be less than 100m in places until around 9am. It means the rush-hour commute will be hazardous, especially along the south coast from Dorset in the west to West Sussex in the east.

Airports may be affected and those expecting to catch a flight today should check with their airline ahead of travel. The section of the country subject to the yellow weather warning is below flight paths for planes arriving and leaving the likes of Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport.

Writing on its weather warning, issued at around 3am, the Met Office says: “Dense fog leading to slower journey times… Slower journey times with delays to bus and train services possible. There is a chance of delays or cancellations to flights.”

Parts of Somerset, Wiltshire and Surrey are also expected to be particularly foggy this morning. It may cause trouble on the M3, M27 and major dual-carriageways across these counties. Motorists should leave with extra time this morning, the weather service says.

“Patches of dense, locally freezing, fog have formed across the warning area, reducing visibility to less than 100 m in places. This will make for some tricky driving conditions. Fog will clear through Wednesday morning,” the Met Office warning, which expires at 9am, continues.

It will be foggy further north too, but not enough to warrant further weather warnings. Forecasters understand fog will blanket parts of south Wales and Merseyside until around 10am, so again motorists in these parts should take care.

But when the fog eventually clears, it will be another mild and sunny day for many, especially in eastern areas. Highs of 14C are expected across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk. It will also be around 13C across London, forecasters believe.

Tuesday’s high was a balmy 14.6C in Chertsey, Surrey, figures released by the Met Office show. It was also 14C in Santon Downham, Suffolk, and the mercury in Yeovilton, Somerset, reached 13.9C on Tuesday.
