The meteorological bureau has issued a yellow weather alert, effective immediately – they have urged the public to be safe on Wednesday morning and respect the conditions

The Met Office has issued a weather alert for a large section of England, with travel disruption likely.

The weather warning comes into effect immediately, with the Met Office predicting that fog patches will affect parts of central and southeast England on Thursday morning.

Although some areas might not see any fog, the Met Office said where it does form it may “be dense in places with visibility below 100 metres,” which could see travel conditions growing difficult.

Fog will slowly clear from the west after dawn, but Britons are warned that conditions may linger until mid-morning in the east of the warning area.

Regions and local authorities affected include:

  • East Midlands spanning Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland
  • East of England spanning Bedford, Cambridgeshire, Central Bedfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Luton, Norfolk, Peterborough, Southend-on-Sea, Suffolk, and Thurrock;
  • London and South East England spanning Bracknell Forest, Brighton and Hove, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Kent, Medway, Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire, Portsmouth, Reading, Slough, Southampton, Surrey, West Berkshire, West Sussex, Windsor and Maidenhead, Wokingham
  • South West England spanning Wiltshire.

As the fog may impact areas that include Luton, Heathrow and Stansted, flight delays or cancellations may occur. Britons are advised if travelling by air to keep their eye on flight arrival and departure times just in case.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, leaving extra journey time, or amending plans if necessary,” the spokesperson said.

“Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey. Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel, may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company, and follow their advice.”

Conditions may also change, with the Met Office warning that people across the UK should “be prepared” if they do.

In England, Britons can expect foggy and frosty start for some in the southeast. Rain will be arriving from the northwest, heavy at times and accompanied by coastal gales. Mild air accompanying this in the west but remaining chilly in the east.

This evening, rain is expected to continue pushing southeastwards. Clear spells follow behind along with blustery, and potentially thundery, showers in the northwest.

Patchy frost is possible across Scotland; milder where cloud persists.
