The Met Office has warned that strong winds and showers could disrupt Brits plans for the early May bank holiday weekend as low pressure moves in.

Brits heading into the early May bank holiday are being warned to brace for wild weather, with the Met Office predicting strong winds and heavy showers could batter parts of the country.

The long weekend, including Monday, May 4, is set to take a turn after a brief spell of calmer conditions, with forecasters warning things will soon become far more unsettled.

In its latest outlook, the weather forecaster said: “High pressure is likely to lie close to the UK at the start of this period. Most places will be dry with sunny spells and light winds, although there could be some overnight mist and fog.”

But don’t get too comfortable because the picture is set to quickly change. The Met Office warned: “Into the first week of May, conditions will probably become more changeable with low pressure systems becoming more likely.

“This means an increasing chance of showers or longer spells of rain, with a risk of strong winds at times. Temperatures are likely to be close to or slightly above normal.”

The shift could spell trouble for bank holiday plans, with blustery gusts and downpours threatening outdoor events, travel and staycations across the UK. And it’s not going to stop there, experts have said, according to Birmingham Live.

Looking further ahead, the Met Office warned the unsettled pattern could stick around well into mid-May, saying: “Low pressure systems will probably dominate across the UK at the start of this period.

“This means showers or longer spells of rain are likely at times, heavy in places with a risk of strong winds. Temperatures will probably be close to or slightly below normal.

“Later in the month more settled, drier conditions may begin to develop with temperatures perhaps rising slightly above normal.”

After weeks of mixed spring weather, the latest forecast suggests Brits may need to keep umbrellas and jackets close at hand, with the bank holiday weekend shaping up to be anything but a washout-free escape.
