Areas of northern England and southern Scotland have been warned of heavy snow tomorrow as Storm Bert blows into the country, with people warned of power cuts and travel issues likely
An amber alert has been issued for snow as dangerous conditions are forecast to hit tomorrow morning, bringing travel nightmares and power cuts to areas.
Potentially heavy snow is forecast for areas of England, including Yorkshire, which is set to cause disruption between 7am and noon. As much as 10-20cm could fall on the ground – with even more on hills above 400m.
The amber alert from the Met Office warns of potentially severe travel delays as well as “likely” power cuts and disruption to mobile phone signal. Some of the country’s rural locations may also be cut off as the snow continues to fall on Saturday.
The Met Office warning says: “Heavy snow will spread northeastwards on Saturday morning giving significant accumulations, especially on hills. Temporary accumulations of 5-10 cm are possible in the Vale of York, with 10-20 cm on ground typically above 200m, and potentially as much as 20-30 cm on hills above 400m.
“Snow will eventually change to rain in all areas by Saturday afternoon, but may be preceded by a short spell of freezing rain in places adding to the ice risk. Strengthening winds will lead to drifting of lying snow, with difficult travelling conditions likely on higher level routes, and the risk of interruptions to power supplies. A fairly rapid thaw of lying snow is then likely later on Saturday and overnight as milder air moves in.
“It is safer not to drive in these conditions, but if you need to make an essential journey, consider alternative forms of transport, to keep you and others safe.”
