McDonald’s will soon increase the number of points needed to get free food through MyMcDonald’s Rewards – here is what you need to know
McDonald’s fans have been left furious after the fast food chain revealed a big change to its loyalty scheme.
Maccies will soon increase the number of points needed to get free food through MyMcDonald’s Rewards.
You currently need 5,500 points for items including a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin and Nine Chicken Nuggets.
But from March 17, you will need 6,500 points to exchange for one of these items. You get 100 points for every £1 you spend at McDonald’s.
At the moment, you need 1,500 points for items such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries, but this will increase to 2,000 points.
The points threshold to get items such as a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will rise from 2,500 points to 3,500, and to get a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, you will need 5,000 points, up from 4,000 points.
In a discussion on social media, one fan said: “Not at all happy.” Another asked: “When does this start? I need to cash in and move on.”
A spokesperson for McDonald’s told The Sun that the changes to the loyalty scheme “reflect rising food and supply costs”.
They added: “While we have increased the points required across all tiers to reflect rising food and supply costs, we’ve also introduced a number of fan favourites now available for redemption for the first time.
“These include our popular Chicken Selects, Cheese sides and delicious new Sausage Sandwich, providing even more choice for our customers.”
It comes after McDonald’s launched its new menu, featuring a Surf N’ Turf burger which has never been seen before in the UK. This consists of two beef patties, a crispy white fish fillet patty, plus cheese, onions, pickles, mustard and ketchup.
There is also the new Chicken Cheeseburger, which features a beef patty, a crispy coated chicken patty, cheese, onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup.
You can also tuck into the new Espresso Milkshake, which comes as a thick vanilla milkshake, served with a shot of espresso for you to mix in. There are also new Chilli Cheese Bites which come with a tangy tomato sauce.
