Many versions of the item have now been discounted from £65 to £39, giving customers a saving of £26

As autumn leaves fall and the mercury drops, numerous households are preparing for heftier energy costs. Therefore, it’s hardly surprising that many people are looking for wallet-friendly ways to stay warm without cranking up the heating.

A popular answer among savvy consumers is the Oodie. For those unaware, these are effectively giant, wearable blankets, usually featuring an oversized hood and an enormous kangaroo pocket.

The phenomenon for these started building steam in 2020, with UK purchases from the Australian company reportedly rocketing by over 200%. However, last year, a reader of Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Expert (MSE) website also expressed her appreciation for these wearables during rising energy costs, insisting she didn’t need to turn up the heating after purchasing one.

“Invested in an oversized hoodie blanket to snuggle up in, not used heating since,” she wrote. This fan certainly isn’t the sole person praising this clothing item either.

A mother-of-two similarly told Manchester Evening News that her family’s Oodies, worn for several years, have been excellent at keeping her and her children warm, both inside and during trips in their campervan.

“When you want to avoid putting the heating on, these are fab,” the mum, who also follows Martin Lewis’s advice, said in 2024. “The kids love theirs and never complain about being cold.”

Genuine Oodies can be expensive, but there’s a clearance sale now offering both children’s and adults’ styles. Many adult Oodies have been discounted from £65 to £39, giving customers a saving of £26.

Beyond this, the website offers a wide range of popular character-themed products, such as Harry Potter, Pokémon, Hello Kitty, and PAC-MAN.

If you’re hesitant to buy an authentic Oodie, alternative retailers offer comparable cosy blanket hoodies. Dunelm sells these for children and adults, with some costing as little as £11.20, while Matalan and John Lewis also feature their own versions.

However, in light of the fan’s support for Oodies, an MSE spokesperson previously clarified: “Any products mentioned on the MoneySavingExpert site are not endorsements and are purely down to journalistic research from the MSE team and Martin Lewis.

“In this instance, a wearable blanket was suggested by a member of the MSE Forum.”
