About Ms. Natalie Camacho Mendoza
Born into a low-income, hardworking family, Ms. Camacho Mendoza was raised by her parents to believe that she could achieve any goal if she applied herself. She observed the successes of her five older siblings as they progressed through their careers, aspiring to lift the family out of poverty through education and hard work. From her siblings, she learned how to navigate her academic career and excel, regarding them as the first of many mentors throughout her life.
Ms. Camacho Mendoza received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho, and a Juris Doctor from Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas. She was the first Latino born and reared in Idaho to receive a license to practice law in Idaho in 1991, a major accomplishment for a woman of color and the daughter of a farmworker.
The mayor of Pocatello appointed Ms. Camacho Mendoza to the Human Relations Advisory Committee when she was only 21. She was soon thereafter elected to vice chair. Since then, mayors, governors, congressional members, policymakers and university presidents have appointed her to boards, commissions, committees, and task forces.
A Notable Career in Law
Following her education, Ms. Camacho Mendoza entered the legal field, often working for law firms that concentrated on helping people in similar situations to her family. She started as a staff attorney at Idaho Legal Aid Services Inc. in the late 1980s and later served as the director of the migrant law units, and co-managing attorney of one of the statewide offices just a few years out of law school.
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, she worked at several law firms, including Quane, Smith, Howard & Hull LLP, Frank R. Rivas, and Associates (corporate litigation counsel for State Farm) and Plunkett, Gibson & Allen. In 1998, she became a partner at AJH LLC. The first Latino lawyer to rise through the ranks of one of Idaho’s larger private firms. She has also performed contract work with Tribal communities.
In 2009, Ms. Camacho Mendoza and a law partner started the first Black and Latino-owned law firm in Idaho. In 2015, she was appointed as the City of Boise Director of the Office of Police Oversight, the first woman and Latino in that role. She temporarily stepped down to serve as the interim Boise City Attorney, the first Latino to serve in that capacity. She is currently the principal owner of her own law firm that focuses on Indian law, labor law and worker’s compensation. The firm also offers consulting services on police accountability and services to nonprofits.
Hard Work and a Commitment to Excellence
Ms. Camacho Mendoza is committed to helping her community by volunteering and serving on multiple local, state, regional and national boards for organizations such as Farmworker Justice and MoFi, a CDFI providing services in the Northwest and Rocky Mountain states. She has received many awards, including the Idaho Business Review Leaders in Law, Women of the Year, and inclusion in The Latino American Who’s Who and Marquis Who’s Who prestigious listings.
Throughout her exceptional career, Ms. Camacho Mendoza has continued to be inspired by the members of her family. She learned from them and other mentors. She pays it forward by mentoring others including students.
