Local politician Dean Luke Booth has called for people to avoid the area with police on the scene.

He wrote on Facebook. “I am aware of the highly concerning reports and the large emergency services presence at the Co-op Academy on Plant Hill Road this morning following a school lockdown.

“Greater Manchester Police have just released an official update to reassure parents and the local community:

  • Officers are currently responding to an incident at the school, and one schoolgirl has been arrested.
  • Three people have been injured, but thankfully, police have confirmed that the injuries are not believed to be serious at this time.
  • There is no wider threat to pupils and staff within the school.
  • Emergency services remain on the scene to manage the situation and support the school.

“I know exactly how terrifying it is for parents when an incident like this happens, but please try to remain calm. The police have confirmed the immediate threat has been contained and the children are safe.

“Please avoid the immediate area to allow the ambulances and police to do their jobs. I will share any further official updates as soon as we get them.”
