An ambulance was called to The Watch Maker pub on Eccleston Street in Prescot on Tuesday after a man in his 70s collapsed in the access toilets – he was rushed to hospital but sadly later died

A man has tragically died after collapsing inside a Wetherspoons pub.

North West Ambulance was called to The Watch Maker pub on Eccleston Street in Prescot, Merseyside at 5.17pm on Tuesday following reports of a medical incident.

The man, in his 70s, was treated by paramedics at the scene before being rushed to hospital. A spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon said managers of the pub called for an ambulance after the man collapsed in the access toilets.

They added a fellow customer also saw what was happening and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The pub said it has since been informed the man died following the incident, Liverpool Echo reports.

A spokesperson for the pub chain added: “The pub was closed to allow managers to deal with the incident and to allow the ambulance service to work unhindered as it was in a customer area.” They also said “due to the upset” the incident caused, the decision was made to close the pub for the rest of the evening “to allow the team to regroup”. It has since reopened this morning.

This comes as a British climber has been killed after he and a friend were engulfed by an avalanche while scaling a frozen waterfall in Norway. The man died in the disaster on Friday but his body was only recovered this week as mountain rescue teams’ efforts were hampered by appalling weather. His pal – a man in his 30s – was airlifted to hospital by helicopter but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The pair had tackled the icy slope dubbed The Gausta Marathon near Rjukan when they became trapped in a wall of ice and snow. Jørn Knustad, a climbing guide in the area, said: “The waterfall is about 17 rope lengths long and is the longest we have here. That is why it was originally named Gausta Marathon.”
