There’s no denying the price of everything seems to be going up and up, and that’s why one man wanted to share his way to make a cheap and ‘hearty’ Christmas dinner

A man has shared how you can make Christmas dinner on a budget this year if you’re struggling for cash, and many have praised the final product. With prices ever-rising, and turkeys from some supermarkets setting you back upwards of £100 this year, it’s all too easy to feel many festive pressures in the build-up to December 25.

That’s why one man, who posts money saving advice on TikTok as @costoflivingcrisistips, shared a way to make a cheap Christmas meal for just £6.31 – because you don’t have to push the boat out to enjoy “hearty” food with lashings of gravy.

Shopping in Aldi, he shared exactly which bits he was buying from the supermarket and the prices of everything. He referred to it as his “can’t be bothered Christmas dinner,” that was more affordable than others you may see online.

First, he showed peeled potatoes in water for 39p, a tin of peas for 28p, and tinned carrots for 49p.

Then, he suggested buying some Bernard Matthew’s turkey drummers from Iceland for £2.25, which is hugely cheaper than even a turkey crown from there.

He said he was going to do just sausages instead of pigs in blankets, and stuffing was “too much graft” to make from a packet so he decided to leave it on the shelf.

The gravy was £1.09, and it was Aldi branded granules, and 15 Yorkshire puddings set him back just 46p, saying it was a “bargain”.

When he got home, he cooked the sausages and turkey drummers in the air fryer together “to save money,” and then put the potatoes in one pan on the hob, and the carrots and peas in another pan, again, to make it cheaper.

He also recommended you “stick the kettle on for the gravy,” saying he prefers to put four tablespoons in, rather than teaspoons which is suggested on the packet. This way, it’ll make the “gravy nice and thick”.

“When the veg is done, drain it, and stick the Yorkshire puddings in when the turkey’s done, for two minutes,” he instructed.

“Stick the sausages on the Yorkshire puddings to save space, get a little toad in the hole thing going on, and you’ve now got Christmas dinner on a budget,” he shared, as he poured the thick, dark gravy all over the top.

“Smother it all with that nice thick gravy, and you’ve got a nice hearty meal. Total cost? £6.31,” he ended the video by sharing.

In the comments, someone said: “Sadly, this is more than a few people’s reality at Christmas.”

Another replied: “I’ve had this Christmas dinner as a kid. I never cared. I never knew we were struggling at the time, and it was still nutritious and filling.”

One woman wrote: “That’s a solid plate of food for a very reasonable price. Lots of families would be really pleased with that.”

“A child wouldn’t know the difference and if this makes it affordable then this is nothing but positive,” somebody shared.
