Lidl has made a major update to its customer app as it works to get more shoppers to join its loyalty scheme.
The supermarket chain has recently shut down its original customer app and is now directing users to switch to its Lidl Plus rewards app according to the Grocer Magazine. The discount chain’s customer app was used to showcase weekly offers and a digital version of its in-store leaflet.
As of last month, users opening the old app are greeted with a message saying: “The Lidl app is no longer supported. Please switch to the Lidl Plus app for greater savings and super perks.”
The Lidl Plus app launched back in 2020 and offers rewards each time its scanned at the checkout. Each week, customers will also get new single-use personalised coupons to use on their next shop – with some discounts of up to 25% on selected products. The app also offers the occasional freebie to shoppers.
The older app, which was released in 2013, was also popular, having been downloaded more than 50million times from the Google Play Store alone. Lidl said the older app had provided details on offers and products along with store information. However, since all this information was also available on the Lidl Plus app, the decision was taken to archive the older app to make things simpler and more streamlined for customers.
The change means that shoppers who used the older app will now have to download the Lidl Plus one to keep up with offers and discounts at the supermarket. Earlier this year, Lidl updated its loyalty scheme to introduce new weekly discounts for shoppers which came on top of the coupons already offered. The new discounts – which change each week and are personalised based on your shopping habits – are then automatically applied at the checkout when you scan your Lidl Plus app.
