ZHENJIANG, China–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dec 17, 2024–

On December 16, 2024, the capacity expansion and replacement work of the No. 1 main transformer at the 500kV Shangdang Substation, a vital hub for transmitting electricity from the north and west to the south and east of China, was completed and successfully connected to the grid. This further enhanced the grid’s equipment, effectively ensuring reliable power supply for the upcoming winter and spring.

This year, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration issued the “Large-Scale Equipment Upgrade Plan for Key Energy Fields,” proposing to promote the implementation of equipment upgrades and technological renovations in the power transmission and distribution sectors to support the construction of a new energy system. As an important regional hub substation, Shangdang is the first 500kV substation in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. The substation has a total of four main transformers, with the No. 1 main transformer, which has a power supply capacity of 750 MVA and has been in operation for 29 years, posing certain operational risks.

The six-month project followed the sequence of “removing the old before installing the new” and was implemented in stages according to the power outage plan. The 750 MVA No. 1 main transformer was upgraded to a new 1000 MVA domestic model, adding approximately 250 MVA of power supply capacity to the western region of Zhenjiang. The additional electricity can supply the needs of 3.3 million households for one year.
