Police Scotland said today they are hunting “a man with a possible weapon” and closed part of the M8 in a bid to locate the suspect bringing the motorway to a standstill

The M8 motorway has been closed as police search for an armed man.

Specialist officers raced to the scene at the M8 today just before 9am today after they were alerted to reports of a man being armed with a weapon. Police are now searching the area to learn the circumstances around the alert.

Police Scotland said they received a report of “a man with a possible weapon” on the M8 slip road at Junction 6 eastbound in North Lanarkshire at about 8.55am on Monday. The Mirror has contacted Police Scotland for comment.

The force said in a statement: “Police are in attendance and a search of the area is being carried out. Specialist officers are also in attendance, as a precaution, and extensive inquiries are ongoing.”

“The M8 is closed at junction 6 eastbound for Newhouse and Chapelhall and motorists are advised to avoid the area while investigations are carried out.”

Traffic Scotland said the part of the off-slip was restricted dur to a police incident. “New 10:12. M8 (EB) to A8 off-slip Junction 6A,” it said in a post shared to X/Twitter.

“Roundabout at end of off-slip currently restricted due to an on-going police incident Road users in the area are advised to find alternative routes at this time.”
