A busy motorway has been closed southbound following a crash near Sheffield that saw all emergency services, including an air ambulance rush to the scene.

Huge queues have built on the M1 carriageway after the collision which happened between junction 33 and junction 32 for the M18 Interchange. Traffic was plunged into chaos, hampered further by another broken down vehicle on the same carriageway nearby.

An update from our traffic partner Inrix says: “M1 Southbound closed, long delays due to accident from J33 A630 (Catcliffe / Sheffield / Rotherham ) to J32 M18 (M18 interchange). One lane closed and queueing traffic due to broken down vehicle on M1 Southbound from J34 A631 Tinsley Viaduct (Meadowhall) to J33 A630 (Catcliffe / Sheffield / Rotherham ).”

Diversion route now in effect for southbound commuters

National Highways confirmed it has initiated its diversion protocols in relation to the serious crash that occurred at about 6pm. Crews were alerted to the incident just before 6.30pm, and investigators remain at the scene to figure out what led to the serious incident.

A National Highways spokesperson told the Mirror that “road users are advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on road signs” in the area.

Diversion Route for M1 southbound traffic after incidents at J33

  • Exit M1 southbound at J33.
  • At the roundabout at the end of the slip take the third exit onto A630 (Sheffield Parkway).
  • Continue along the A630 for approx. 3 miles to the junction with the A57.
  • At the junction with the A57, turn left and continue along the A57 for approx. 6 miles to the junction with the M1 J31.
  • At the roundabout take the third exit to re-join the M1 south at J31.

Third crash throws spanner in the works for northbound commuters

Heading northbound, and a minor fender bender has prompted laneway closures for traffic in the opposite direction. According to National Highways data, two lanes are closed on the M1 northbound, between junctions J19 and J20.

That collision is expected to clear shortly, with National Highways traffic data indicating the laneways should be reopening imminently.

Second crash triggers further closures

A collision on the M1 southbound entry slip at junction J33 has seen further closures for southbound commuters. The two J33 crashes are expected to impact traffic overnight and into rush hour, with r National Highways reporting the slip lane crash is not expected to clear until around 6am.

M1 single vehicle crash sees air ambulance rush to scene

The most serious closure, which is expected to hamper traffic overnight and into rush hour, saw the M1 in South Yorkshire closed to southbound traffic at about 6pm on Tuesday, January 20, after a single vehicle collision between J33 (Rotherham) and J32 (M18).

All emergency services attended, including Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

South Yorkshire Police remain at the scene carrying out collision investigation work.

Three crashes for the M1 in total

Traffic has been plunged into chaos on the M1, with three crashes clogging the major roadway and causing delays for motorists.

The M1 in South Yorkshire was initially closed to southbound traffic between J33 (Rotherham) and J32 (M18) following a single vehicle collision which occurred shortly before 6pm.

A second collision at the entry slip for junction J33 saw traffic hampered further, closing a lane to already congested traffic.

To make traffic matters even worse, a third accident on the M1’s northbound lanes has prompted laneway closures between junctions J19 and J20.
