You can easily make your kitchen and bathroom cooler during the heatwave
Another band of hot weather is taking over the UK, with many households doing all they can to stay cool. Temperatures are set to get up to 34°C in some parts next week.
Temperatures are forecast to rise to 29°C on Sunday, then into the low 30s next week, peaking at 34°C on Thursday and Friday in the South East. It is set to mark the start of another prolonged spell of hot weather in the UK.
Many homes turn to electric fans to cool rooms, yet experts have revealed a clever way to lower temperatures in kitchens and bathrooms.
They are among the most-used parts of homes and can get hot from baths and showers or cooking. Most kitchens and bathrooms are fitted with extractor fans, which can provide some cold relief in hot weather.
How to use extractor fans to cool down your home
British Gas recommend using extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens to provide ventilation and bring in cooler air. It said: “Extractors don’t just get rid of smells and steam from cooking and showering – during hot weather they can be put to double use.”
The expert recommends opening internal doors and leaving bathroom and kitchen extractor fans running. It will help create airflow throughout the home and remove warm air.
British Gas added: “It’s best to do this after cooking or showering, which can both increase humidity and heat.
“Make sure to open windows and vents elsewhere so that fresh cooler air can come in to replace the warm air expelled by the extractor fan.
“Don’t forget to shut internal doors again once you switch the fan off so warm air doesn’t flow back into the cooled rooms!”
How to cool down your home without a fan
The experts also recommended encouraging cool airflow by closing off unused rooms during the day, before opening doors and windows in the evening.
It is recommended not to throw open the windows when the heatwave is at its peak.
British Gas said: “Tempting as it might be to throw your windows open during a heatwave, leaving them shut when the day is at its hottest will keep rooms cool in summer.
“So try to only let in the air early, or late, in the day.” To cool down your bedroom before bed, open the internal doors and windows in the evening.
There will be cooler air outside later on in the day, and opening the windows then can let hot air out of your home. It also works better if you open windows on opposite sides of your home.
