Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky enjoyed a warm reception in the UK when he met with King Charles just days after his White House bust up with Donald Trump
King Charles reiterated his support for Ukraine by welcoming Volodymyr Zelensky at Sandringham just days after the tense encounter between the Ukrainian President and Donald Trump at the White House.
Mr Zelensky met the King at Sandringham today as European, Canadian and Turkish leaders met to discuss presenting a united front against Russian aggression. The Ukrainian President arrived via helicopter after it took off from near Buckingham Palace and flew for Norfolk.
The stunning backdrop comes as Mr Zelensky continues to pursue continued support for Ukraine. His prestigious reception comes just days after US President Donald Trump and his Vice President JD Vance ganged up to berate and humiliate the Ukrainian leader during his White House visit.
The bust up led to a collapse in talks about a mineral deal between the US and Ukraine as well as dashing any hopes Mr Zelensky had for to securing a security guarantee with Washington.
But Mr Zelensky received a hero’s welcome when he arrived in London earlier this week, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer reasserting the UK’s support for Ukraine. He was also clear Europe needed a united front against Russia.
“Three years on from Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, we are at a turning point,” Starmer said in Downing Street on Friday. “Now is the time for us to unite in order to guarantee the best outcome for Ukraine, protect European security and secure our collective future.”
Mr Starmer said today he accepted “without criticism and with respect” the position of other countries who may not feel able to contribute to the so-called “coalition of the willing.” Asked whether he had been trying to persuade other nations to join it today, the Prime Minister said: “A number of countries have indicated today that they want to be part of the plan that we are developing.
“I’ll leave them to make their own statements about exactly how they want to make that contribution. But we’ve been able to move that forward. I accept, without criticism and with respect, the position of other countries that may not feel that they want to contribute in that way but I strongly feel that unless some move forward, we will stay in the position we’re in and not be able to move forward.”
Mr Zelensky previously met the King Charles in July last year as he visited the UK to attend the Fourth European Political Community Summit at Blenheim Palace. He thanked the UK for being “one of Ukraine’s closest and most important allies.”
