One gardening expert has taken to TikTok to share the best flower bulbs to plant this autumn to make sure your garden is blooming and beautiful when spring comes

One gardening expert has shared which bulbs are best in the autumn to prepare a spectacular garden display in spring.

TikTok user ‘plant_daddyuk’, also known as ‘Michael’, said that autumn is the “perfect time to get your spring flowering bulbs in the ground or pots.” He advised gardeners to plant a range of bulbs that will bloom in the spring next year, advising that September to November was the best time to plant.

In a post on October 15, Michael said that tulips are one of the best flowers to plant at this time of year. BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine also said tulips are “perfect for adding colour to borders in April and May and grow very well in pots”. The magazine advised: “Tulips are spring bulbs, planted in mid to late autumn. Tulips are technically perennial, but years of breeding to get the most beautiful blooms means that many varieties only flower reliably for one year. Many gardeners plant new bulbs each autumn to ensure a good display. If you’re growing tulips in pots, you need to plant fresh bulbs each year.”

In his video, Michael also advised that muscari, alliums, daffodils and fritillaria are all great flowers to plant. This set of flowers will provide gardeners with a wide range of colours once spring arrives. As the days become darker and colder, life can seem a bit more miserable outside of the summer sun, but there a few ways people can get their garden to bloom. Michael shared the best bulbs to plant this autumn.

In a clip, Michael showed his over 32,000 followers that a number of flowers and plants typically last a bit longer than others, sustaining the colours in your garden for a bit longer. One of those plants was coneflowers, with the bright yellow or pink flowers typically lasting until “the first frost”, Michael said.

Grasses are another good way of adding to the autumn interest, Michael said. Miscanthus sinensis, also known as ‘Chinese silver grass’, is said to be one good choice. The plant, Crocus said, is a type of clump-forming grass that is not invasive, making it great for gardens “of all sizes” as it is easy to maintain.

Other grass plants Michael included in his video were pampas grass and the Calamagrostis X Acutiflora. The latter, also named ‘Karl Foerster’, is “easy to grow in most moist, humus-rich, well-drained fertile soils, but will tolerate all but the poorest soils”, according to the Royal Horticultural Society.

For gardeners who wanted beautiful colours in their garden, look no further than the Virginia creeper vine which flashes bright red with “unrivalled” colours according to Michael. For shrubs, Michale recommended the photinia x faseri ‘Red Robin’, the zantedeschia ‘Hercules’ and the ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelli’, although the last in the list is not hardy during winter months.

In a caption on the video, Michael reminded gardeners: “Don’t just focus on the summer months. You can still enjoy the garden in the autumn.” One person commented: “So beautiful. I try but fail, sadly this year no autumn colours on the leaves of mature trees, brown and withered.”
