Cleaning expert Nancy Emery has hailed a 17p hack that is guaranteed to leave your taps shining and scuff-free. Plus, it also works on getting rid of the grease in your microwave

The key to gleaming taps is probably already sitting in your kitchen.

Deposits of grime, soap scum, and limescale can easily build up on your taps, as well as an army of smudgy fingerprints which are a nightmare to wipe off. Many taps are also made with materials that can react badly to potent chemical-filled cleaners – turning them an unsightly brown colour and permanently dulling their shine.

However, there is an easy solution to get rid of dirt and grease without being stuck with a hefty bill from replacing every tap in the house. The secret? One of the cheapest and tastiest fruits you can easily get your hands on… Nancy Emery, a cleaning expert at Tap Warehouse, has urged Brits to avoid ‘harsh chemicals’ such as vinegar when cleaning your taps in the kitchen or bathroom – especially if you have finishes including matt black, chrome, or brushed brass. Instead, the ace recommends using a much less abrasive solution that will still lift all of the stubborn grime.

“The best way to keep your taps spotless and scratch free is by using a 75/25 solution of lemon juice and water,” she added. “You can also just use a soft cloth and warm soapy water, but the lemon juice will help remove any tougher stains. When you’re cleaning, ensure the lemon juice isn’t left on to soak for more than a couple of minutes before rinsing.”

Lemon has long been a popular cleaning product due to its grease-melting properties. The fruit, which can picked up for as little as 17p from your nearest supermarket or green grocers, is also a natural antibacterial and antiseptic. Its strong citrus scent also adds a great scent to your bathroom without relying on chemical-filled air fresheners.

Nancy says lemons can also make a great microwave cleaner, and can get rid of bacteria and cut through grease due to their acidity. To try the hack, simply fill a microwavable bowl half way with water along with half a lemon (you can use the other half for your taps) and pop it into your appliance.

“Heat on high power for three to five minutes to create steam and then wet the cloth in the water and begin to wipe away any grime from the interior,” the expert advised. “As a rule, make sure you’re wiping the inside of your microwave after each use to keep it in the best shape possible.”
