What should have been an ordinary sleepover with mates descended into every parent’s worst nightmare when two teenagers were sexually assaulted by a TV personality who was supposed to protect them.

The court heard that Alford’s attacks occurred whilst the girls were having a sleepover at a friend’s house during the Easter holidays. The impromptu gathering was hosted at the home of a third girl – whose father was acquainted with Alford – following an evening at the pub.
None of the teens had previously met the Grange Hill star. The evening eventually came to a close and all the occupants of the house retired to bed.
However, Alford remained awake, finding himself the only adult left with the girls, the court was told. The convicted sex offender exploited this position of authority to ply his victims with alcohol, making a trip to a nearby petrol station at 4:30am and purchasing £250 worth of food, cigarettes and alcohol – including rum, beer and flavoured vodka.
The court was informed that due to the nature of the discussions he had with them that night, he was aware of the girls’ ages. Upon returning to his friend’s residence, Alford was seen nursing a bottle of beer whilst both girls drank from the bottle of Ciroc vodka he’d provided.
The father-of-four proceeded to have sexual intercourse with the 14 year old girl in the garden of the property and later in a downstairs loo. He also indecently touched the 15 year old girl as she lay semi-conscious on the living room settee.
In a video of her police interview shown to the court, the 14 year old revealed she had never had sex prior to that night and claimed she had been assaulted. She stated: “I told him to stop because I didn’t want to have sex with an old man”.
The court heard Alford asked her ‘do you want this babe?’ to which she responded “no”. She informed the police she asked him to cease “three or four times”.
Meanwhile, the 15 year old girl assaulted by Alford told the court: “We were all just like dozing off. That was when John started to touch me.” The young girl said she felt “absolutely sick” following the assault and immediately took a shower after being dropped off at the home of the other girl Alford attacked.
She recounted how they both entered a bathroom together and “spoke about everything that happened”, before discussing the incidents again whilst visiting a different friend’s house two days later. Remembering the moment, she stated: “I had a mental breakdown to my best mate’s mum in the garden and she called my mum.”
Recorder Caroline Overton informed the court that the girls were in what should have been “a safe environment” whilst having fun at the sleepover, including making TikTok videos. She addressed Alford: “You were the one remaining adult. You were a trusted family friend and you were fully aware the girls were 14 and 15 years of age.”
During the trial, jurors learned that, upon his arrest, the disgraced TV star insisted he had “never touched” either of the girls and told police officers: “This stinks. This is a setup.”
However, a jury disagreed and found Alford guilty of all charges after a week-long trial and over 13 hours of deliberations. Once brimming with vitality, the two girls now describe themselves as shells of who they once were after their trust was callously betrayed by a man who should have safeguarded them. The 14 year old victim told police Alford was older than her dad.
In her victim impact statement, she said: “I’m the victim of penetrative sexual assault. Being sexually assaulted has affected my family in every way.”
The girl detailed how, following the assault, she had to undergo a sexual health examination, though it couldn’t be completed as it caused her unbearable pain. She was also administered the morning after pill and received injections for HIV and other diseases, which left her with bruising.
She said: “I was scared people were going to notice and wonder why I had them. I had so much shame about the incident. I didn’t want to tell anyone.”
She revealed she eventually confided in her brother, who informed her parents, including her father who tried to console her. The girl explained: “My dad hugged me, but I didn’t feel comfortable with it because he was a man. It has affected me severely with school.
“I didn’t care about my GCSEs as this was the only thing that mattered. I wasn’t bothered about my personal hygiene or appearance. I was just existing. I’ve become protective of my friends and any girl I see. I’m always on the look out for a man doing something wrong. What happened to me will be with me forever, but I won’t let it change me.”
The youngest victim revealed she now avoids drinking as it brings back memories of that evening. She continued: “I remember what John smelled like. I was getting flashbacks. I’ve been getting dreams. I’m convinced he’s going to come through my door. I also find it hard being intimate with my boyfriend because of this.
“The assault by John has completely changed my perspective on life. It has made me look very differently at the world and I now have worries for my life and my future children. I will not let this assault define me, but it has been constantly in my mind.”
For Alford’s second victim, who was just 15 when she was attacked, the trauma from that evening “destroyed” her. Devastatingly, she inflicted serious self-harm for years following the assault and even tried to end her own life at 16.
She now bears permanent scars from the self-harm. In a deeply moving victim impact statement presented to the court, she said: “This man destroyed my mental wellbeing. When I was 16 I tried to take my own life with sleeping tablets. I was in so much physical and emotional pain I cut myself deeply. I used my mum’s lighter to burn the inside of my thighs as well. I felt so suicidal and depressed, words cannot describe how I felt.”
The girl revealed she frequently experiences flashbacks and nightmares and confessed: “Every day I wake up thinking I could have done something to help my friend.”
She also disclosed she blames herself. “I still face challenges everyday because of what he did,” she stated. “I cannot get on public transport, I can’t do anything by myself.”
Haunted by the attack, she additionally described how if she wakes during the night, she’s too frightened to visit the toilet alone. She explained: “I struggle with men. I don’t want to think of every man as evil, but I do. I will never forget his face, his scent, his voice or him.”
Despite the unimaginable trauma he inflicted upon his victims, Alford displayed no remorse in court. He merely tapped his heart whilst glancing at family members before being taken down to the cells.
Recorder Overton noted he had remained fixated on the impact of the offences on himself and his family rather than his victims. She stated he had demonstrated “a lack of acknowledgement” of his behaviour or “any remorse”. And she continued: “It is so serious that only a sentence of immediate custody can be justified.”
But now the star has died, with prison officers finding him “unresponsive” in his bed.A Prison Service spokesman told The Mirror: “John Shannon died in prison on 13 March 2026. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”
A source told The Sun that Alford was found unresponsive in his bed at the Category C HMP Bure in Norfolk. There was no response when they tried to wake Alford, it was claimed, and medics were called.
“He didn’t wake up in the morning. He was in his bed and they thought he was just asleep. But when they tried to wake him there was no response and they realised he was dead,” a source said.
