Dr Nicole Rous is a vet who often shares handy pet advice. According to her, there are three simple things you can do to try and prolong your dog’s life. It’s worth listening to her tips

There’s nothing quite as special as the bond some people have with their dogs, which is perhaps why the thought of being without them is so devastating. However, according to expert advice, there are things you can do to try and prolong your dog’s life, and adopting the practices may be easier than you think.

Vet Dr Nicole Rous has detailed exactly how you can boost their lifespan in a candid video shared online. According to her, you just need to do three simple things to both give your pet a better life and also slash your vet bills at the same time.

So, if you’re looking for ways to improve the health of your animals, you may want to pay attention. It turns out, certain dog breeds can also come with lower medical bills too.

Dr Nicole said: “Times are tough, so I want to give you my top tips to save money, save [on] your vet bills and help your dog live longer. My number one is always to maintain an ideal weight.

“Overweight pets have more vet bills, more disease, more inflammation, more joint issues. You know the story. Same as humans on that one.

“Number two is give them your good leftovers. So you can add 10% to 15% leftovers without a problem. Good quality meat, good quality veggies – no onions, of course.

“These are really beautiful bioavailable nutrients that are going to help them do everything their body needs to do in a better way. Number three is keep their mind and body fit.

“So walk up those hills. It will help build some muscles. Change the path you go on a walk. It will help stimulate their brain. These are all good things for the pet owners as well, but hopefully that will help you.”

Little you may know, there are some things you can do to better the health of your dog. Making some simple changes can go a long way.

What you need to know

Experts say there are key actions you can take to prolong a dog’s life. They claim this can be done through proactive care, and it has the potential to add five to seven years to a pet’s life.

Key strategies include maintaining a lean body weight, providing high-quality nutrition, regular exercise, keeping up with dental health and ensuring you attend regular veterinary check-ups for early disease detection.

Dr Nicole was also correct about what she said about mental stimulation, as this is also important. While changing walking routes can help, puzzle toys and training can also assist in keeping their minds sharp.

Not to mention, it’s also been reported that adding “quality” human leftovers to their diet can make a difference too. Fresh, non-processed foods that are safe for animals can actually improve their health, particularly regarding digestive issues.

Safe and healthy leftovers include things like cooked, unseasoned meat such as chicken, beef and turkey. They can also eat steamed or boiled vegetables like carrots, green beans and broccoli.

Fresh food can help improve gut microbiome diversity and reduce the risk of digestive disease. If you have any concerns, or need extra information, contact your vet for further advice.
