Terrifier

The third instalment in this low-budget franchise has been a surprise hit as cinemagoers have been walking out and vomiting at its gory horror. The first film in the franchise centres around a demonic clown named Art, who wreaks violent havoc against three young women on Halloween night.

Amazon is home to the first two Terrifier films, as Terrifier 3 is currently only available in cinemas and will likely not be available to stream for some time.

Totally Killer

Totally Killer was a big hit for Amazon when it premiered last Halloween thanks to its mashup of horror, teen comedy and sci-fi. It centres on 17-year-old Jamie Hughes (Kiernan Shipka), who, 35 years after the grisly murder of three teens, accidentally travels back in time to stop the masked killer’s spree before it happens.

With the help of her teen mother and her friends, Jamie must navigate the unfamiliar and outrageous culture of 1987 and take down the killer before she’s stuck in the past forever.

Them

The latest season of Amazon’s limited anthology series – which explores terror in America – boasts a 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Them: The Scare centres on LAPD Homicide Detective Dawn Reeve (Deborah Ayorinde), who is assigned to a new case: the gruesome murder of a foster home mother that has left even the most hardened detectives shaken.

Navigating a tumultuous time in Los Angeles, with a city on the razor’s edge of chaos, Dawn is determined to stop the killer, but as she draws closer to the truth, something ominous and malevolent grips her and her family.

Kill List

Ben Wheatley’s unsettling indie flick flew largely under the radar but is not to be missed for horror fans. It follows former soldier turned contract killer Jay (Neil Maskell) almost a year after a botched job left him physically and mentally scarred.

Jay takes a new assignment with the promise of a big pay off, but what lies in store is more horrifying than he could have ever imagined.

The Blair Witch Project

The film that popularised the found-footage genre is my go-to Halloween watch every year, which still holds up 25 years after its release. The film follows a trio of young amateur filmmakers on what should have been a simple walk in the woods as they investigate the legend of the Blair Witch, but it quickly becomes an excursion into heart-stopping terror.

Dead Ringers

This modern take on David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller stars Rachel Weisz in the double-lead roles of Elliot and Beverly Mantle. In the six-part series, the Mantle twins are gynaecologists who share everything: Drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes – including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics – in an effort to change the way women give birth.

Carrie

Brian De Palma’s iconic 1976 horror stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, a shy young girl who doesn’t make friends easily. After her classmates taunt her about her horrified reaction to her unexpected first period, one of them takes pity on her and gets Tommy Ross (William Katt), her boyfriend and class heartthrob, to invite Carrie to the senior prom.

Meanwhile, another girl who has been banned from the prom for her continued aggressive behaviour is not as forgiving.

A Quiet Place

Directed by The Office star John Krasinski, this suspenseful, post-apocalyptic horror was a worldwide smash, with Stephen King hailing it an ‘extraordinary piece of work’. It stars Krasinski as a father and husband living in a world decimated by mysterious and deadly creatures that hunt by sound, as his family is forced to navigate their lives in silence.

World War Z

Brad Pitt goes up against hordes of the undead in this fast-paced, pulse-pounding zombie epic. Pitt stars as former United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), who is called in to help stop the deadly pandemic that has spread around the world.
