A plumbing guru has shared his DIY solution to dodgy water pressure, and it’s easy to do at home. All you need is a homemade remedy and you’ll be back to powerful showers in no time

In this economy, calling out a plumber will set you back a whopping £40 to £60 an hour. If you need the plumber to be out on the job for the whole day you will be forking out up to £400 – and that’s outside of the festive season.

Complex jobs should always be left to the professionals, but there are some smaller fixes that any homeowner can tackle with the right advice. Plumbing guru Matthew Farris says he’s seen “just about every plumbing issue out there” and now he’s sharing his wisdom. Ferris says he loves helping homeowners come to solutions by themselves, and one problem he sees time and time again is water pressure – but there’s an at-home trick that might solve it. The pro says it’s usually a matter of water mineral buildup inside the shower head and is very manageable for the average person to handle.

Speaking to the Express, Ferris, who is the founder of Ferris Plumbing, shared his top tips on handling pesky plumbing problems in your home. Ferris said: “An easy fix many people can do at home is simply remove the showerhead and soak it in a vinegar solution overnight to break down the scale.” Ferris says this will absolutely make the showerhead “like new” by the morning and for many this can resolve their water pressure issues. However, while the expert says this is “definitely worth a try,” it’s unfortunately not a solution that will work for everyone. There can be other issues if your water pressure is low, including a kinked hose or older piping. This will be the moment you will need to pack away your DIY attitude and call a professional, according to Ferris.

What about slow drains?

Slow drainage can also be another pesky house issue that can initially be managed alone without the costly call to a plumber, according to Ferris.

He recommends trying the home remedy which includes boiling water, baking soda and vinegar first as this is a natural unclogging hack. The mixture will help get rid of the food or soap scum in your drain.

Ferris says to make sure to follow up the cleanse with boiling water down the sink to flush everything out. If the issue persists he says you probably need a snake to break up the clogs further down, meaning you should call in a professional.
