Available in three chic colours, shoppers have hailed the handbag as ‘classy and stylish’, making it the perfect wardrobe upgrade this payday
After what’s felt like the longest month ever, payday weekend is finally here, so I’ve been scouring the high street for the best fashion buys to spend January’s wages on. For those looking for a wardrobe refresh without breaking the bank, Marks and Spencer’s new-in collection is full of stunning items – with a piece of arm candy having caught my attention for being the ultimate everyday staple.
A new handbag is a great way to update existing outfits and make them feel new. Unlike new garments which may only get styled a handful of times, an accessory often pays for itself in weeks as they can be teamed with almost anything.
As a fashion writer, I’ve honed my instincts when it comes to spotting those under-the-radar pieces, and I predict the M&S Faux Leather Buckle Shoulder Bag is going to be a popular choice this season – and dare I say it, a sell out. Priced at £33, the affordable accessory comes in three colours that steer away from traditional black and tan, opting for chicer palettes that feel far more interesting.
The luxe-looking accessory comes in a dreamy olive shade, a tan-leaning cognac, and an on-trend slate blue, the latter of which was a firm favourite for me. It’s designed with a smooth faux leather exterior with gold hardware, which personally I adore because I mostly wear gold jewellery, but for silver fans, there doesn’t seem to be a colourway with silver metal accents, which some may have preferred.
The bag features a central buckle which gives it an elevated feel, which when opened up reveals a secure zip fastening. Inside the main bag is another zipped pocket and slip pouch, ideal for stowing away personal belongings.
Faux Leather Buckle Shoulder Bag
A gleaming metallic buckle brings a sophisticated feel to this faux leather shoulder bag. It fastens securely with a zip and is fully lined. Inside, you’ll find a zipped pocket and a slip pouch to organise your essentials.
In terms of size, it’s a compact bag that sits neatly under the arm with a faux leather shoulder strap. We’ve seen crossbody bags dominate in recent years, but I feel a shift coming for this smarter, more polished alternative which will nicely juxtapose more relaxed, casual outfits, while finishing off dressier looks effortlessly.
It’s got plenty of space inside without tipping into bulky territory, easily fitting phones, keys, lipsticks and purses with space to spare.
Also dipping their toe into the dusky blue trend is ASOS, with this elongated tote bag with seam detail for £22. It’s got slightly longer straps and no hardware, making it slightly more versatile for those picky about their metals.
For those who prefer silver, this Fiorelli Emery Mini Satchel Bag is down to £45 at Debenhams, reduced from £75. Made from premium faux leather, it is designed with rolled handles, a detachable crossbody strap and a secure zip compartment.
Back at M&S, five-star reviews have already been rolling in for the handbag, with one commenting: “Brought as Christmas gift. Good size but not too big.”
Another added: “I fancied a change of bag style so went for this one not sure yet if I’m going to like the change but I will give it a go. Nice bag plenty of space.”
“A great quality handbag and a super affordable price,” wrote a third, while a fourth described it as ‘classy and stylish’, adding: “Lovely shape and colour. Looks much more expensive than it is. Ideal size as I often find cross body bags too small.”
For those looking for a wardrobe upgrade that doesn’t make a massive dent in their January pay, this M&S handbag is my top choice.
