The Soham double murder monster remains in a serious condition after a fellow inmate battered him around the head with a metal bar, during a workshop at HMP Frankland

Ian Huntley’s mum reportedly made a secret visit to her son in hospital and told friends “part of me hopes he passes away” after the child killer was bludgeoned in prison.

The Soham double murder monster remains in a serious condition after a fellow inmate battered him around the head with a metal bar, during a workshop at HMP Frankland. The evil killer, who murdered 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, was rushed to hospital with severe brain injuries after the Thursday morning attack and was reportedly given just a 5% chance of surviving.

Mum Lynda Richards, 71, drove 175 miles, from her home in Lincolnshire, to be with her killer son and a source claimed the mum later told pals she “just wants to be free of it”.

The caretake is serving a life sentence after he murdered the two schoolgirls, after they left a family barbecue to buy sweets in Soham, Cambridgeshire, on August 4 2002.

A source, according to The Sun, claimed Richards and a friend were escorted to the hospital wing by a Prison Service member of staff – while her son is being guarded by armed police. They added that the mum “couldn’t recognise her own son” when she saw him after the brutal attack.

The source said: “He’s been attacked on so many occasions and she now thinks it might be better if he didn’t pull through. It’s an extraordinarily difficult thing for her to come to terms with.

“Part of her just hopes he passes away this time. But he’s still her son, regardless of what happened, and they have remained very close.”

This source also claimed Richards spoke to her son two days before he was battered, adding that she “can’t be at peace until it’s all over — and it won’t be over until he’s gone”.

Durham Constabulary this morning issued an update on Huntley’s state and said: “There has been no change in the 52-year-old man’s condition overnight – he remains in hospital in a serious condition.”

The number one suspect in the prison attack was named last night as triple killer Anthony Russell, although police and prison authorities have not confirmed his identity. The suspect is said to have yelled “I’ve killed him” as prison staff led him away.

This comes after a source revealed to The Mirror the Soham murderer “knew he was a target” and had been paranoid about being poisoned. The source said: “He knew that he was a target. That is why he was so paranoid about his food.”
