Ian Huntley’s mum, Lynda Richards, “couldn’t recognise her own son” when she saw him after the brutal prison attack which has left him with a 5% chance of surviving
Ian Huntley’s mum reportedly “couldn’t recognise her own son” after the child killer was bludgeoned in prison, her close pals have said.
Huntley, who is serving a life sentence at HMP Frankland in Durham, was found in a pool of blood on Thursday after being attacked. The number one suspect has been named as triple killer Anthony Russell, although police and prison authorities have not confirmed his identity. The suspect is said to have yelled “I’ve killed him” as prison staff led him away.
Huntley is serving a life sentence after he murdered the two schoolgirls, after they left a family barbecue to buy sweets in Soham, Cambridgeshire, on August 4 2002. His girlfriend, Maxine Carr – the girls’ teaching assistant – had knowingly provided Huntley with a false alibi.

She was jailed for three-and-a-half years for conspiring with Huntley to pervert the course of justice.
Huntley’s mum Lynda Richards, 71, drove 175 miles, from her home in Lincolnshire, to be with her killer son and a source claimed the mum later told friends she “just wants to be free of it”.

A source, according to The Sun, claimed Richards and a friend were escorted to the hospital wing by a Prison Service member of staff – while her son is being guarded by armed police. They added that the mum “couldn’t recognise her own son” when she saw him after the brutal attack.
The source said: “He’s been attacked on so many occasions and she now thinks it might be better if he didn’t pull through. It’s an extraordinarily difficult thing for her to come to terms with. Part of her just hopes he passes away this time. But he’s still her son, regardless of what happened, and they have remained very close.”
Durham Constabulary this morning issued an update on Huntley’s state and said: “There has been no change in the 52-year-old man’s condition overnight – he remains in hospital in a serious condition.”
The latest attack on Huntley is not the first time Huntley has been attacked at HMP Frankland. In 2011, an inmate who slashed Huntley’s throat with a makeshift knife was jailed for life.
Damien Fowkes was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years for the attempted murder of Huntley in March 2010 and the manslaughter of child killer Colin Hatch.
