Here’s what I thought after trying the Simba Hybrid Pillow

I’m the first to admit I’m not the best sleeper. You can bet as soon as my head hits the pillow my brain will start thinking about whether I sent that email or what I have to do the next day so unless I’m ultra comfy I find it hard to stay asleep.

Creating a comfortable and calming sleep environment helps to give my thought-filled head the best chance at snoozing the whole night through, but when sleep products can be expensive it can be hard to know which products are worth the splurge.

As a shopping writer, sleep retailer Simba has been on my radar for years, so when I got the opportunity to try their Hybrid Pillow I jumped at the chance.

For reference, I prefer a firm pillow that keeps my head propped up and I also like to feel cool at night all year round, so I’d opt for a cold pillow over warm bedding. I’m also a side sleeper so wanted to see if the pillow is comfy for my desired sleeping position.

Pros

  • Full filling gives hotel quality feel
  • Feels comfortable
  • Cooling
  • Option to remove filling to customise pillow firmness to user’s preference

Cons

  • Pillow shows through lighter pillowcases
  • Keeps head quite high unless lots of filling removed which some may not like
  • Potentially works better for side sleepers due to moulding to head
  • Can be hard to fit into tighter pillowcases

About the Simba Hybrid Pillow

The Simba Hybrid Pillow retails for £109, but just what features does it have to warrant the price tag? The pillow has been designed with down-like cushioning and is height and firmness adjustable by adding or removing some of the Nanocube core filling. The main selling point for me is the pillow’s Stratos ‘cool-touch’ tech which helps to promote fresher sleep.

As I’ve got older I’ve definitely become fussier about sleep materials, so I was pleased to read that the cover is made from breathable cotton. The pillow offers gentle support to the head via the cushioning inner sleeve, though some may wish to remove some of the filling as it comes fairly puffed up. Other features include an open mesh border that encourages air circulation.

As a busy person that’s also fussy about keeping things clean, I’m not a fan of anything too high maintenance. Luckily the Simba Hybrid Pillow boasts a quilted zip-off washable cover for easy cleaning and includes a storage bag so it can be kept fresh when not in use.

For those in the market for a new pillow, some other highly-rated options include the £45 Panda Bamboo Memory Foam Pillow that boasts a 4.7 star average rating out of five stars at Dunelm.

It’s been reviewed thousands of times, and one shopper said: “Bought for my son who has longstanding neck and shoulder problems. He says he has had the best sleeps and no pain or discomfort disturbing his sleep and on waking. Very happy.”

Another more budget-friendly option is the £20 Hiimgo 2 Pack Shredded Memory Foam Pillows from Amazon. They feature an ergonomic design that provides extra neck and shoulder support. One purchaser said: “Pillows are excellent. They come vacuum packed. They are hard but squishy, sort of like memory foam. Great value, perfect.”

My thoughts on the Simba Hybrid Pillow

One of the big questions for me if I were going to invest in a £109 pillow is ‘can it be kept in good condition?’ because I would definitely expect longevity and a decent cost-per-use for the price.

Whilst I haven’t had the pillow long enough to see significant signs of wear, after using it for a several weeks I can safely say it hasn’t sagged or flattened like many of its cheaper counterparts.

My favourite feature is the Stratos ‘cool-touch’ tech which can sound like sales patter, but Simba says is ‘similar to the innovation that keeps astronauts cool in space.’ The tech has been designed to give the user instant coolness (even through a pillow case) and to help dissipate excess heat.

I have noticed it doesn’t feel stuffy if I wake in the night, so I’m pretty impressed on that front. For those who like the sound of this technology, there’s also the Hybrid 3-in-1 Duvet that features the same cooling tech.

I didn’t feel the need to adjust the Hybrid Pillow’s filling as I like mine high and firm, but I know not everyone has the same preference. Once I saw the Nanocubes inside the pillow I wasn’t sure it would give the plump effect I was after, but it’s filled generously so it was the ideal height and bounce for me.

The Nanocubes are meant to encourage greater airflow and give ‘more precise comfort than even the best memory foam pillow.’ Whilst I’ve been happy with the memory foam pillow I had for months previously, I do believe the Simba Hybrid gives more flexibility and moulds more to my desired sleeping position.

The pillow claims to have excellent shape retention and I’d say this is where it excels. It moulds nicely to my head during sleep but also bounces back easily when not in use. I’ve sometimes previously been known to wake with a twinge in my neck but this hasn’t happened since using the Simba Hybrid Pillow.

Is the Simba Hybrid Pillow worth the price?

If you have the budget to spend, then overall the Simba Hybrid Pillow is a solid all-round choice. One of the cons I would say as someone who likes their bed to look nice is that the pillow’s design with the colourful logo shows through white or lighter bedding. One of my pillowcases has also come loose at the seams since I’ve had the pillow as it’s quite bulky to fit into the average case.

My fiance prefers his head to be closer to the mattress so the pillow’s height could be too high for him. Whilst this can be adjusted by removing the filling, it would then also potentially reduce the user’s desired firmness.

Another consideration is that if you wanted two of the same pillows for a double bed, the cost racks up. If a partner is using a flatter pillow there’s also a visible difference between the two on the bed, but this is more of an aesthetic consideration.

Personally I think the Simba Hybrid Pillow is a great choice for side and back sleepers who want to feel cool and comfortable. It’s definitely on par with luxury hotel style bedding but this is reflected in the price tag.

Plenty of shoppers on the Simba website agree that the pillow is super comfortable, with the item amassing over 34,000 reviews averaging out at a 4.7 star rating out of five. As for my waking in the night, I have noticed this has been reduced since sleeping with the pillow which I would attribute to the added comfort.
