The high street giant has a whole range of denim skirts at the moment, but this is definitely my favourite

Denim skirts have been a staple in wardrobes for decades, but this season they’re getting an update, with Marks and Spencer seemingly offering one of the largest varieties of styles on the high street right now. But my personal favourite has to be this Denim High Waisted Maxi Asymmetric Skirt – the perfect blend of vintage and contemporary design.

Long denim skirts made a resurgence a couple of years back, with the midi pencil-skirt style dominating the 2022/2023 season. And this year, they continue to adapt to the latest trends and remain a hardworking wardrobe workhorse and a stylish alternative to jeans.

Already we’ve seen designers like Levi’s and Mother incorporating long denim skirts into their collections for 2025. But if you’re looking for an affordable way to get the look on the high street, M&S’s piece is a worthy purchase – I’d know, seeing as I bought it in both colourways.

‘I tried LookFantastic beauty egg that gets Medik8, Elemis and Rodial products for under £9 each’

The £45 skirt comes in a medium indigo and a light denim, the latter of which leans into the boho chic revival. Trying on this skirt, I was immediately impressed by its retro design. Its asymmetric paneling, which adds movement and a unique silhouette, gives the skirt a ‘the 90s does 70s’ appearance, but feels fresh and updated for 2025.

Made from 100% cotton, it’s soft, lightweight and destined to be a summer staple. It comes in sizes 6-22, and is available in three lengths to ensure your preferred fit, however I did find that I had to go a size up in the skirt as I struggled to zip my usual size to the very top, so it’s worth noting that I found it to come up slightly small.

I do like that it has a side zip, which some shoppers have said helps ‘hold’ your tummy in, and it’s even got a button for extra security. With its flattering fit, swishy volume, and versatile design, this skirt is the perfect piece to transition from spring to summer in style, and I can almost guarantee it will be a sell out in the coming weeks.

With an average rating of 4.2 stars, one shopper wrote: “The fit is very close but once done up gives a great shape and even holds my tummy flat. I love retro hem line and think it will be ideal for trip to uk beach next month.”

Another added: “Really lovely denim skirt. The zip is at the side so there is no bulging tummy look which happens to me with button front denim skirts.” While a third penned: “The skirt is good quality, doesn’t crease, comfortable waist and looks great with boots or trainers.”

One wrote: “This skirt will be used for so many occasions. It’s a great style to dress up or down, and the shape is flattering. I did order the short one which came to my ankles at it’s lowest point and I am 5ft 4′.”

And another said they knocked a star off because they think the design would be even better if it had pockets, commenting: “I love this skirt.. it is comfortable and easy wear.. the reason that it hasn’t got 5 stars is because it needs POCKETS.”

M&S currently has more than a dozen denim skirt styles in its own brand collection, which is made up of easy-to-wear wardrobe staples. This Denim Maxi Skirt comes in medium indigo or ecru, and is cut to a stylish maxi length from pure cotton with a hint of stretch for comfortable wear. The panelled design lends it a voluminous feel while ensuring a flattering silhouette.

Elsewhere, River Island has this Blue Denim A-line Maxi Skirt for £45, while Next’s Mid Blue 100% Cotton Belted Pocket Stitch Midi Skirt comes in slightly cheaper at £45.

One of the best things about a denim maxi skirt is its versatility – you can pretty much treat them like a pair of jeans, styling them with almost any top, whether it’s a tucked-in white t-shirt and trainers for an effortless, laid-back vibe, or a delicate blouse – like the one I tried on in-store – and heeled boots for a more polished look.

In the end, I simply couldn’t decide which colour of the M&S skirt to buy, so ended up bringing both home with me and I’ve no doubt they’ll earn their keep in my wardrobe in no time. If you’re in the market for a flattering, high-quality denim maxi skirt, this one is well worth adding to your basket.
