The top Yorkshire pudding was melt-in-the-mouth tasty
Yorkshire puddings are a highlight on any roast dinner and a comforting side to hearty meals. Frozen Yorkshire puddings offer convenience, as they can be thrown into the oven just minutes before serving.
There are plenty of different varieties on the market, with supermarkets also offering their own-brand versions. Aunt Bessie’s is the best-known brand of Yorkshire puddings and a staple in many freezers across the UK.
However, I decided to taste a range of frozen supermarket Yorkshire puddings to see if they could match up to the brand. I tucked into a mid-range Yorkshire pudding from M&S, Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Lidl and Sainsbury’s to see who would come out on top.
M&S – £2.20
Before cooking the M&S Yorkshire puddings, I thought they were going to be a strong contender to rival Aunt Bessie’s. They were much larger than most other supermarkets and seemed about the same size as the branded ones.
However, I was very surprised by the flavour and not in a good way. They cooked wonky and came out dry. I wasn’t expecting an overly moist Yorkshire pudding as I tasted without gravy, but they were the driest out of all the offerings. At times, they even tasted watery.

Tesco – £1.45
Tesco’s Yorkshire puddings didn’t look the greatest once cooked. They struggled to crisp up as much as the others, looked pale and were the flattest of them all.
The taste wasn’t much better either as they were too buttery, which was an unwelcome surprise.
Rating: 3/10
Sainsbury’s – £1.40
The Yorkshire puddings from Sainsbury’s held their shape well as they cooked, but did slightly burn. They tasted as you would expect but lacked a fluffiness I like in a Yorkshire pudding.
Rating: 5/10
Asda – £1.10
These Yorkshire puddings had a homemade taste and were nice and crispy. If you want a crunch to your Yorkshire pudding, this provides it.
Rating: 8/10
Aldi – 99p
Aldi’s Yorkshire puddings were light, fluffy and crispy. They tasted much like the branded version and came in much cheaper. It was hard to find fault with these, but the rest narrowly beat them.
Rating: 9/10
Aunt Bessie’s – £2.50
The branded Yorkshire pudding came out the biggest on the taste test and had a perfect crunch. It is clear why Aunt Bessie’s is the market leader for a branded Yorkshire pudding, but one supermarket came out top.
Rating: 9/10
Lidl – 99p
The budget supermarket won the crown of the best Yorkshire pudding for this taste test. It was melt-in-the-mouth and perfectly golden. The Yorkshire puddings had a great crunch and moreish flavour that left you wanting more.
