With hay fever season upon us, many people will be feeling the full effects of the allergy symptoms. But Aldi’s new range of bedding promises to help those struggling to have a good night’s sleep, and Mirror writer Niamh decided to give it a try

As much as the arrival of summer is eagerly anticpated, with it comes the influx of allergies and hay fever. Hay fever season is marked on pollen sufferers calendar each year, with tissues and antihistamines at the ready and with reports of an ‘Easter pollen bomb’ arriving, I knew I needed to do something to try and cure me.

While it can be bearable in the daytime – sometimes – it can be a real pain at night. Tossing and turning while trying not to itch your eyes and sneeze can be tricky, but Aldi may have the answer to all of us hay fever warriors.

The latest Slumberdown anti-allergy bedding has launched in Aldi middle aisles as part of their special buys, and in a bid for a good night’s sleep, I put it to the test.

I was sceptical about whether it would work, as I am plagued by pollen. I wanted to see if this bedding could cure me. It has the British Allergy Foundation UK seal of approval, so I decided to give it a go. With a huge range of items on offer, from pillows and duvets to mattress protectors, toppers, and pillow protectors, you can kit out your whole bed with the range, and it’s all machine washable, too.

I picked up a two-pack of pillows (£7.99), a king-size 10.5-tg duvet (£ 16.99), and a mattress protector (£6.99). After a few nights with my new bedding on, here’s what I thought.

Slumberdown Anti-Allergy King Duvet – £16.99

For £16.99, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this duvet, but one thing I did notice was that it was very soft. The special fabric helps to reduce the build-up of dust mites and bacteria while also keeping you warm. However, it didn’t feel too heavy, which will be ideal for sticky and hot summer nights. Although it was light and soft, it didn’t give a very luxurious feel compared to my regular duvet, so I don’t think I would keep it on all year round.

I have to say it was very cosy, while still being lightweight – and I didn’t wake up feeling groggy or fighting hay fever as badly as usual for the three days I tested it out for which was a huge win.

Slumberdown Anti-Allergy 2 pillows – £7.99

These pillows are said to be specially formulated with an anti-allergy filling again to help reduce the build-up of dust mites and bacteria. They are also very soft and are advised as medium support and good for those who sleep on their backs. However, I can’t say I was too impressed with these pillows, as they felt quite thin despite being medium support. After night one, I had to switch back to my usual pillows to be able to sleep comfortably.

I am quite fussy with pillows anyway, so it may just be down to my personal preference. However, when I used them, I didn’t wake up with my usual hay fever symptoms, so I can’t complain.

Slumberdown Anti-Allergy Mattress Protector

When it comes to mattress protectors, I feel like it’s always important to make sure you choose a good quality one, and for £6.99, you can’t go wrong with this one. I feel like the quality of the fabric isn’t the best, as it’s not as soft as I would have hoped, but underneath a bedsheet, you can’t really tell. I think for the price point and the promise of a blissful night’s sleep, this protector is a win, and I didn’t wake up with any hay fever symptoms.

Overall, I was impressed with the bedding, as I didn’t wake up with my usual hay fever allergies as bad as I usually do. I also like that the whole range is machine washable at 40C, which is vital for washing away any pollen that may have been spread onto the sheets. It also seems like the type of material that would dry quickly, as opposed to a feather duvet or pillows.

The products are reasonably priced, which makes them appealing, especially as they can be used just for the summer months. I definitely think they helped ease my symptoms a lot. While my hay fever symptoms were still there, they were much milder in the morning. My only issue is that they all felt quite cheap and not the best quality, and when it comes to my bedding, I do prefer a more luxurious and heavy-duty option.
