As Martin Lewis reissues guidance to ‘heat the person, not the home’, we try a 1p per hour hack to stay warm at home

Money-saving expert Martin Lewis has been reminding everyone to “heat the human, not the home” as winter approaches, encouraging people to look for small switches that make a big difference- from electric throws to thermal layers.

So when I spotted the cosiest-looking heated blanket that promised warmth for less than 1p an hour to run, I decided to give it a go. And honestly, it’s been the best decision I’ve made all year.

The Morphy Richards EverCosy Fleece Electric Heated Throw sounded too good to be true at first, but now it’s become the most exciting part of my evening routine (who says you can’t have fun in your thirties, eh?). It’s big enough to share, soft enough to nap under and affordable to use without feeling guilty about the energy bill. But from the first night, I also realised how much sense it made. Instead of blasting the central heating, I’ve been wrapping up on the sofa with this and staying perfectly warm for next to nothing.

The throw, priced from £69.99 for a small size (but still 160×130), heats up quickly and spreads warmth evenly, with nine temperature settings to choose from and a timer you can set between one and nine hours. I have the large size and it’s big, 200cm by 180cm, so it properly covers you, and it’s made from a mix of teddy fleece and flannel that feels soft.

Sometimes, electric blankets can look so ugly, but this feels like it was made with interior decor in mind. I also like that the controller is detachable, which means it’s machine washable.

‘My electric blanket costs 1p to use and is perfect for the colder weather’

Morphy Richards EverCosy Electric Blanket features:

  • Costs less than 1p an hour to run, so you can stay warm without worrying about bills
  • Nine heat settings and an adjustable timer let you tailor the warmth to how you feel
  • Soft teddy fleece and flannel fabric make it very cosy
  • Machine washable design thanks to the removable controller
  • Automatic shut-off and overheat protection for peace of mind

I use it constantly now when I’m reading, watching TV, even working from home– and it’s meant I haven’t reached for the thermostat to give it a boost even once, meaning I’m saving a small fortune compared to last year when I had my heating on from October. It’s also great for throwing across the bed before getting in, so it’s toasty by the time I switch off the lights.

It’s not often something that feels this nice turns out to be practical too, but this heated throw really has made cold evenings so much easier . It’s safe, simple and the green shade fits right in with my living room decor. However, if you want something similar for a little less of an upfront cost, Lakeland’s StaySnug Velvety Taupe Heated Throw is now £29.99 in an early Black Friday sale, and has great shopper reviews.
