If you’ve left Mother’s Day to the last minute, fear not, as a quick trip to Asda could see you looking like you’ve been planning something for months in advance

If you’re being pretty last-minute when it comes to Mother’s Day, you’re in luck, as you can still grab yourself a bargain for the woman who raised you, and she’ll have no idea it was so cheap.

From flowers to teddies and bottles of prosecco or champagne, depending on your budget, there are so many different gifts that you can pick up from supermarket shelves. But, if you want to go the extra mile and look like you’ve spent more than you have, and you don’t mind putting a little bit of extra effort in, you could make your mum an afternoon tea.

Ashleigh, who posts on TikTok as @ashleighmoneysaver explained that she set herself a £10 budget for her mum, but she managed to create a feast, and it cost less than the budget she set.

When it came to sandwiches for the afternoon tea, Ashleigh went for ham and cheese. Ham cost her £1, a loaf of essentials Asda bread was 55p, and she went for the cheapest cheese in the shop, which was £1.39.

She said that it “wouldn’t be afternoon tea” without putting on a spread of sultana scones, which set her back just £1.23.

Rodda’s clotted cream was £1.78, and the cheapest strawberry jam she could find was 49p, which she said was “such a bargain”.

Ashleigh said that when it comes to tea, it “has to be Yorkshire Tea,” because she reckons it’s the tastiest. She got a small box for £2.18, noting that she already had milk in the house. But, “if you need to put milk in the budget, you can swap to Asda’s own tea and grab some milk too”.

Plus, Ashleigh “needed the cake,” picking up some Angel Slices, for £1.24 for a box of six, so if you’ve got a sweet tooth, these are perfect.

All in all, the afternoon tea cost her £9.86, and if you were feeling really generous, you could always pick up a bunch of flowers for her as well, as Asda have them at competitive prices. Ashleigh noted that it was “such a bargain”.

In the comments, someone wrote: “This is such a great idea! I’ve literally been thinking about what to do, amazing idea on a budget!”

A second penned: “I love that idea. What a lovely idea for Mother’s Day”.

Ashleigh said that she just wanted to prove that you can do Mother’s Day “on a budget if you need to”.

You could cook her favourite meal together and turn it into a fun cooking evening, complete with music and laughter (and maybe some wine if she drinks!)

Another idea is to plan a scenic walk or hike at a nearby park, bringing along a homemade playlist to enjoy along the way. You could also surprise her with a cosy at-home movie marathon featuring her favourite films and some homemade popcorn
