Mark Newman lives near Hillsborough Stadium, the Sheffield Wednesday football stadium, and charges £10 per match for use of his driveway – he says he makes £250 over the football season
A man has revealed how he makes an extra £250 every football season by renting out his driveway.
Mark Newman lives near Hillsborough Stadium, the Sheffield Wednesday football stadium, and charges £10 per match for use of his driveway. He started his side-hustle after he received a knock on the door from one football fan, who wanted to enquire about parking at his house.
Mark said: “He spotted an opportunity to grab himself a reserved spot in a fantastic location. I agreed to let him rent my space for every home-game, £10 per match, which adds up to over £250 across the football season. Deal. He’s been renting this space for a season and a half now.
“He drops a white envelope through my door every time he parks, handwritten with a ‘thanks’ and the £10 enclosed. If I had any advice to people looking to rent their parking space, I’d say make sure you look at the available options online and compare with your location to see what might be available to you. You never know, you could make a nice little side hustle out of it.”
You can use websites such as YourParkingSpace and JustPark to list your driveway. Both of these charge drivers, the person booking your space, a 20% fee on top of the price you set for your parking space, plus as the driving space owner, you’ll pay a 3% processing fee on your earnings. If you own your home, check with your mortgage lender in case they have any restrictions on renting our your driveway. If you rent your home, you’ll need to get permission from your landlord in writing first.
New research from Euro Car Parts reveals Brits are earning an average of £330 per month by renting out their driveways—and in some cities, that figure climbs to £5,000 a year. Euro Car Parts used data from Just Par to identify the top UK locations for making extra cash with unused parking spaces.
Brighton came out top, with residents earning an average of £636 a month by renting out their unused driveway or parking space. The most expensive parking space for rent in Brighton is advertised at more than £5,000 per month. In London, the average price for a rented driveway space is £480 a month. Glasgow and Edinburgh ranked third and fourth respectively, where the average money made from renting out a driveway is £457 and £429 a month.
A spokesperson from Euro Car Parts said: “Parking rentals are a great way to earn extra cash and make use of your unused space, but they also provide an affordable option for your vehicle when visiting other cities. If you’re parking somewhere other than a secure car park, it’s important to ensure that your vehicle is protected from potential theft. Never leave valuables in your car, especially in plain sight, and keep your key in a protective case that prevents fob hacking technology.”
Side hustles can be a great way to earn extra cash – but keep in mind you may have to pay tax. You can earn £1,000 in additional income each tax year alongside your regular job – this is known as your Trading Allowance. If you make more than this, then it most likely has to be reported to HMRC through self-assessment and you may need to pay tax.
