One worked much better than the other
Limescale can quickly build up before you know it, with bathrooms being the worst affected. The hard, chalky substance can linger on taps, shower heads and shower screens.
It can even take over in hidden areas such as water pipes and heating systems. Not only can it look unsightly, but it can also cause damage.
Cleaning limescale can be a tough job, as it is often hard to remove and requires a lot of elbow grease. I noticed a bad build up of limescale on my bathroom taps, so I decided to put two limescale removers to the test.
Viakal brands itself as the “number one against limescale”, so I knew I had to put it to the test. I chose to compare it to the Flash Deep Clean & Hygiene Anti-Bac Bathroom Cleaner, which claims to “remove up to 100% of bathroom grease and limescale.”
Viakal results
I picked up Viakal Classic Limescale Remover Spray from Asda for £2.65, which comes in an easy to use spray bottle. For fairness, I decided to use one spray on each of my taps according to their instructions.
The Viakal bottle said to spray the product onto the limescale affected area and leave for three minutes, which is the maximum time recommended. The spray was easy to direct onto the surface.
After the three minutes were up, I rinsed the tap and used a damp sponge to wipe away the solution and give the limescale a good scrub. I was surprised to see large clumps of limescale remained on the tap even after the spray had been left for the maximum time.
I was able to scrub away some limescale, yet other parts proved far too stubborn. To remove this, I would need to use the solution again, but I didn’t do this as I wanted a fair test between the products.
Flash results
Flash’s cleaner was £2.44 from Asda and came in a near-identical bottle. Its instructions said to leave the solution on for five minutes rather than three.
I didn’t think the tap was as covered by the Flash spray compared to Viakal. Once the time was up, the instructions said to wipe the area and rinse it.
I was surprised to see most of the limescale had lifted and after scrubbing it down with a sponge it looked so much better.
Verdict
Both products were simple and easy to use, with results taking just minutes. However, the Flash product wins for me as it lifted much more limescale than Viakal.
I didn’t need to have a second attempt with the Flash solution to remove the limescale, which is a winner for me. Plus, it comes out slightly cheaper.
Flash’s product also has the benefit of not just being able to remove limescale, but also soap scum and kills 99.9% of bacteria. For me, the solution worked better and saves some money so it is clear which one I would pick next time.
