A cleaning influencer has shared her method for tackling blocked shower drains using a “miracle” drain unblocker that works on hair and soap scum, and I decided to give it a go

My shower drain is perpetually getting blocked due to some issues with our upstairs plumbing. I always find that water takes an eternity to drain, leaving my feet completely submerged by standing water in the shower tray.

The blockages are caused by a combination of hair and soap scum, so it’s impossible to prevent them from forming. As I’ve not maintained regular cleaning of my shower drain, I was in need of a potent product.

Cleaning influencer Kaye Marie has praised a “miracle” product that unblocks drains and tackles hidden plughole dirt in 30 minutes. Sharing her four-step drain cleaning method using Buster Bathroom and Kitchen Drain Unblockers, I decided to follow it using the mentioned product.

While Kaye suggests you only need to leave the drain unblocker sitting for 30 minutes, I opted to leave it overnight, as my drain was in a dire state. The next morning, I ran the shower to test out the drain, and the water flowed down much more quickly.

Before tackling the drain, I began by cleaning the bottom of my shower tray to remove as much of the soap scum and limescale as possible. I also made sure to remove as much hair from the drain as possible.

Despite the chilly temperatures, I ensured to open my window before pouring out the drain unblocker. I simply left the bathroom windows open for 30 minutes to allow fresh air to circulate while the product works.

Next, I emptied an entire bottle of the drain unblocker and left it to work overnight. For minor blockages, the product only needs to be left for 30 minutes.

According to the product description for Buster Bathroom Drain Unblocker on Amazon: “Hair, sludge and soap scum are the usual suspects for slow-draining pipes, but one shot of concentrated Buster bathroom plug unblocker goes straight to the blockage and dissolves all the nasties.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s slow-draining water or a full blockage, the fast-acting shower drain unblocker gets to work almost instantly.”

The following morning, I flushed the drain using hot water. I boiled the kettle and allowed the water to cool slightly beforehand.

It’s crucial never to pour boiling water directly down drains, as this can cause damage to pipes which aren’t designed to withstand such extreme temperatures.

When I tested the shower, the water drained away perfectly without any clogging whatsoever.

Whilst this £4.55 drain unblocker isn’t the most budget-friendly option available, it proves remarkably effective at clearing blocked drains.
