David Beckham’s response to popular Sky Sports reporter Alex Aljoe left her not totally convinced

Sky Sports presenter Alex Aljoe wasn’t sure whether to believe David Beckham after congratulating him on his knighthood. The former England captain, who was knighted at Windsor Castle last month, was attending the Club World Cup in the United States with Inter Miami when he crossed paths with Aljoe.

Working for DAZN, she bumped into Beckham during the opening game. She recounted their brief exchange on The Rest Is Football podcast, hosted by Micah Richards, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, leaving the trio in fits of laughter with her story.

The ex-Manchester City star claimed that Beckham, 50, was “definitely lying” when he said he remembered their previous meeting during his time at Real Madrid. Reflecting on her chat with the Manchester United icon, Aljoe said: “Well, that opening game was amazing, they had an opening ceremony as well.

“[There were] fireworks, French Montana performing… then the players came out one by one, Beckham was there. Sorry, Sir David Beckham was there.

“I congratulated him on his knighthood and asked if he remembered me from years ago, when I interviewed him at Real Madrid.

“He said yes, but the jury’s out on that one.” Richards responded with a grin: “He was lying. He was lying, he was definitely lying.” Lineker then chimed in: “Knights don’t lie Alex. Knights of the realm do not lie!”

The former England defender then offered to help by contacting Beckham on Aljoe’s behalf, prompting Shearer to burst into laughter before adding: “Listen to him, ‘I can text him for you,’ what a k*** you are!”

The England legend received his knighthood in King Charles’ Birthday Honours back in June, describing it as a “truly humbling and emotional moment.” At the time, he said: “Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour.

“To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career, and literally a boyhood dream come true. I’m so lucky to be able to do the work that I do, and I’m grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment.”

During his knighthood ceremony at Windsor Castle last month, he was accompanied by his wife Victoria and his parents Sandra and Ted, and praised the former Spice Girl for designing his smart suit.

Speaking about King Charles’ appreciation of his outfit, Beckham revealed: “He was quite impressed with my suit. He’s kind of the most elegantly dressed man I know, so he’s inspired quite a few of my looks over the years – and he definitely inspired this one.

“It was something my wife made me,” he added. “I looked at old pictures of him when he was younger, wearing morning suits, and thought, that’s exactly what I want. So I showed them to Victoria, and she created it.”
