A charity shop shopper was left stunned after he found a vintage DVD collection for just £8 that he quickly sold on for a large profit, but some people were left baffled by its remarkable resale value
While buying or renting DVDs used to be the most popular way to watch your favourite films or TV series at home, this has now been replaced by the rise of streaming services, such as Netflix or Disney Plus, to name a few. As a result, many DVD collections have been gathering dust, while some have donated theirs to various charity shops.
But it turns out these discs may still be worth a lot of money, if you know what to look for. To help people know which films are worth hanging onto, one successful reseller named Richard Kosala often shares his charity shop hauls on Facebook, as he regularly looks over any DVD and gaming collections in charity shops with the hopes of finding something that’s worth to sell on and make a profit.
In a post dated July 18, Richard revealed a DVD box set that he claims ranks among his greatest ever charity shop discoveries — one that netted him a seriously impressive return.
“One of my greatest ever Charity Shop Finds was from the British Heart Foundation!” he wrote. “I paid £8 for this complete Barbie DVD collection and it sold the same day on my Vinted account for £110!”
The accompanying photo showed off the coveted Barbie DVD collection, complete with its £8 price tag and a bold, golden Barbie logo emblazoned across the pink box.
He also posted a screenshot from his eBay account, revealing the same vintage DVD collection being advertised for anywhere between £160 and £260. Nevertheless, he appeared perfectly content with selling it for £110, netting himself a tidy £102 profit.
Richard isn’t alone in cashing in on the Barbie films, either, as one person revealed in the comments: “Bought one of these at a general (live) auction about a year ago for £12 including fees.
“Turned out one disc was missing, tracked it down separately on eBay for about seven quid, slotted it in and got £109 cash from CEX. The hard part was getting the slimline case version rather than the standard one.”
Others were left stunned by the box set’s value, with many admitting they’d once owned the very same collection.
One user remarked: “I have this in my loft, was my daughter’s, who’s now 14, so at least 10 years old.”
“Wow. Our girls had that set,” someone else recalled. “Definitely didn’t get that much for it when we cleared out!”
“Dream, unfortunately out of my price range now with resellers,” another person lamented.
One user also commented: “I’ve been looking for this in charity shops for years for my girls as I won’t pay the ridiculous eBay and Vinted prices.”
However, some were left scratching their heads over why the DVD box set now commands such hefty sums. One person queried: “Why is this so expensive? Is it literally just Barbie DVDs?”
