Police have launched ‘extensive enquiries’ after a husband and wife were found dead at a home in Wales.

Cristine Jefferies, 72, Stephen Jefferies, 74, and their pet dog – reportedly a cocker spaniel – were found at around 2.50pm on Saturday October 5, South Wales Police confirmed. Detectives retrieved a rifle from the house, on Morfa Crescent in Trowbridge, Cardiff.

Police say the family is being supported and updated throughout the tragedy, and stated they aren’t currently seeking anyone else in connection with the deaths, which has left locals in ‘complete shock’. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Christine and Stephen Jeffries at this difficult time,” said Detective Chief Inspector Lianne Rees.

The detective added: “Extensive enquiries are continuing as we establish the tragic events which took place on Saturday. I would like to thank the community for their continued support and understanding while we progress the investigation.”

According to the BBC, police cornered off the semi-detached house after neighbours reported concerns about the couple. It is said they had been married for more than 50 years and had two children together. Mr Jeffferies is said to have been a referee years ago and was part of the neighbourhood watch, often picking litter to keep the streets clean.

“Everyone’s in shock, they were a lovely couple, completely devoted to each other,” one neighbour who claims he knew the couple well said. “What’s upset people as much as anything else is that their cocker spaniel was killed as well.”

Another resident who wished to remain anonymous described the couple as ‘nice’ and ‘quiet’, adding: “[They] always waved when they drove past me in their van.” A third local, who said the deceased were a ‘wonderful couple’ and ‘really good friends’ said: “We knew something was wrong because we all look out for each other in this little block here. We noticed something was strange that the curtains hadn’t been opened and that was it. We managed to get hold of their daughter and she came and went in.”

Police are still awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to confirm the cause of death. “We understand this incident has shocked and saddened the local community,” added detective Rees. “Currently, we are not actively seeking anyone else in connections with their deaths.” Police also thanked the local residents for their patience and understanding while cordons remained in place.
