Police have launched an investigation after human remains were found inside the wreckage of a small plane recovered from the North Sea.
The aircraft was found at around 2.20pm on Friday in waters north east of Lerwick, near Shetland. It was brought ashore on Sunday and was found to contain human remains. According to reports, Police Scotland said: “Police received a report of a small aircraft having been recovered from the water in the North Sea, north-east of Lerwick, around 2.20pm on Friday December 6.
“The aircraft was brought to shore on Sunday December 8, and human remains were found within.”
It comes after a search operation was launched in October 2023 when a light aircraft with one person on board lost contact over the North Sea. The plane had taken off from Germany, but was beleived to be in the UK search and rescue region when the alarm was raised.
During the search effort, a fixed-wing aircraft was sent to scour an area between Shetland and Norway. But HM Coastguard later said there was no sign of the plane being found and the search was called off.
Authorities added that the search would not resume unless new information had come to light.
