Hull: Police tape off city centre after ‘suspicious package’ found

People in Hull have been urged to stay away after a “suspicious package” was found at a shopping centre, sparking a full evacuation – and the deployment of a bomb squad.

Police have issued a 200-metre cordon around St Stephens Shopping Centre where a large bomb disposal van was filmed racing to the scene to examine the item, found at around 6.20pm today. A cordon is in place for the safety of the public, officers said.

The incident has sparked a major evacuation, including that of the station and nearby hotels, with members of the public urged to avoid the area until police are able to advise otherwise. Witness Chris Cooper took to X to share footage of the moment police taped off the city centre before EOD investigators sped towards the shopping centre.

Humberside Police said: “Officers are currently in attendance at St Stephens shopping centre on Ferensway in Hull and road closures have been put in place on Ferensway, Anlaby Road, and Spencer Street to allow emergency services to work safely. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area at this time.”

Tonight’s incident has triggered cancellations across bus and train services, as well as local events. There are currently closures in place along Ferensway and Anlaby Road.

Rail and bus operators, including Stagecoach, East Yorkshire Buses and Hull Trains have warned commuters that their services are being disrupted, with closures impacting Paragon Interchange. Hull Truck Theatre have also been forced to cancel performances that were due to held at the venue this evening.

The theatre took to X to update its visitors, writing: “Unfortunately, tonight’s performances of Mary and the Hyenas & The Contestant has been cancelled due to a full evacuation at St Stephen’s Square. Our Box Office team will be in touch with all bookers tomorrow (Wed 19 Feb) to discuss exchange/ refund options. Thank you.”
