The storm, forecast to fall across a large swathe of the UK, will see up to 7 centimetres inches of snow blanketing some areas – with one major city bearing the brunt of upcoming snowfall

A huge snow bomb is set to pummel a large chunk of the UK in just days, bringing a sharp contrast to the ballmy spring temperatures that has gripped the country in recent days.

The storm, forecast to fall across the Midlands, North, and Northeast, will see up to 7 centimetres inches of snow blanketing some areas, and according to the Met Office, long spells of rain and thunder. Advanced weather modelling maps by Ventusky show temperatures are also expected to drop from the current spring heat being enjoyed by Brits up and down the country, with some regions experiencing freezing conditions. Birmingham is set to bear the brunt of upcoming snowfall on Sunday, April 20, with up to 7cm forecast to fall over the major city. Stoke-on-Trent, Leicester, Greater Manchester, Leeds, Bradford and some areas southwest of Newcastle are also in the firing line for snow.

Stoke-on-Trent and Leicester are also set to welcome more intense flurries, with 5 centimetres forecast to fall across both areas. Temperaturs in the affected areas will hover between 0C and 3C, according to Ventusky’s predictions. It comes as the Met Office warned of a “transition from the fine and settled conditions” expected from mid-April onwards.

In its long-range forecast from Sunday, April 13 until Tuesday April 22, the national weather agency said: “This will most likely come in the form of a cold front progressing southeast bringing some rain and showers and fresher conditions.

“There is a low risk of heavier, possibly thundery showers coming into the country from the south for a time early in the period, but confidence in this aspect of the forecast is low and these may well pass to the east.

“This heralds a wetter period through the middle of April with showers or longer spells of rain at times, which could be heavy and thundery in places. Strong winds could develop in some areas, particularly the south and west.

“Temperatures are likely to return closer to normal.”

News of the upcoming snow bomb comes just a day after Brits were facing another hot day with temperatures expected to reach 20C this week – making the UK hotter than Rome.

BBC weather forecaster Louise Lear said in this week’s forecast: “It is still about high pressure keeping things very quiet indeed, the winds light as well.

“We could see a little bit more in the way of cloud spilling into the northern and western isles through the day but on the whole the emphasis is on that dry, settled and sunny story right across the country.

“We could see temperatures once again peaking at 19C, possibly 20C. Just a little bit fresher across those east coasts next to that cold North Sea.

“Unfortunately with all that sunshine around tree pollen is very high across a good portion of the country, through Wales, central and southern England.”
