An industrial estate in Wales has been evacuated with plumes of smoke billowing from a massive fire amid fears that the water supply has been affected.
Emergency services rushed to Star Trading Estate, Caerleon, Newport, at around 2.40am this morning following the blaze with people evacuated and the public have been told to avoid the area.
Some locals have reported issues with their running water but the connection with the fire is not clear. One resident posted on social media to say they have yellow water while another responded saying they have no water at all.
According to Welsh Water Dwr Cymru customers may have no water or low water pressure in the area. The website states: “We expect all supplies to be fully restored by early afternoon.”
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service says it is working alongside Gwent Police on the incident, while the Ponthir Road, the B4236, is closed in both directions from Malthouse Lane (Caerleon) to Star Trading Estate (Ponthir).
Barney’s Cafe, situated on the trading estate, says that it is a “serious situation” which has forced it to close. It issued the following statement: “Due to the fire at Star Trading Estate, we are closed until further notice.
“The situation is serious, and we will not know the full impact on our business until we are allowed to return to the premises. We hope everyone affected is safe and will share further updates as soon as we have confirmed information. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
A statement released by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service reads: “SEFRS is currently responding to a large industrial fire at Star Trading Estate, Caerleon, Newport.
“At 2.42am this morning, crews and a number of resources were deployed to the incident, including ten fire appliances, three water bowsers, an aerial ladder platform, and a range of specialist equipment.
“The site as been evacuated, and all persons are accounted for. Members of the public are urged to avoid the area to allow emergency services to carry out their work. Due to smoke in the vicinity, residents are also advised to keep windows and doors closed.
“SWFRS is working closely with Gwent Police and partner agencies to help ensure public safety. We thank the public for their cooperation.”
