The two-vehicle crash in Northumberland this weekend saw seven people taken to hospital after a head-on collision

A horrific two-car crash this weekend which saw eight people injured happened when one vehicle was reportedly driven the wrong way down a dual carriageway.

In all, seven people were hospitalised after the smash on the A1 in Northumberland. Two people are being treated for serious injuries after the head-on road collision between two vehicles.

The incident took place at around 7.30pm, on the A1 southbound at Rosebrough, south of Purdey Lodge and north of Brownieside. The road was closed between the B1340 (Denwick) and the A1167 (Berwick Upon Tweed) for several hours.

A blue Audi Q3 that had initially been travelling north entered the southbound carriageway for an unknown reason. It then collided with a silver Mitsubishi Mirage which was travelling south, and both of the vehicles were significantly damaged as a result of the crash, reports the Chronicle.

A total of eight people were treated when emergency services attended the scene, three from the Mitsubishi and five from the Audi, and one man, in his 40s, suffered serious injuries. He is in a stable condition in hospital.

Police are investigating the crash, which resulted in the A1 to be closed for hours. A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
