A piece of home art at Homesense has left shoppers divided, with some asking ‘just why’ over the piece
Homesense has become a popular place to shop for affordable furniture and home decor, but not everything is a hit with shoppers.
Taking it to Instagram, one shopper shared a piece of artwork they had seen at their local branch. The art in question was a reworking of Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun’s painting of Marie Antoinette, with a butterfly added over the Queen’s face.
Sharing a clip of the art, with text reading: “WHY Homesense WHY”, Instagram user @historicalbeauty wrote: “I’ll never understand why home decor stores have to mess up historical reproduction art. Is it because they can’t produce the art as is?
“I was so annoyed that this portrait of Marie Antoinette had a moth (ok sorry it’s a butterfly!) covering her face. And you can see in the left corner that it’s something about the artist or maker…who ONLY put an insect on her face!
“And you can see in the left corner that it’s something about the artist or maker…who ONLY put an insect on her face! Anyways there’s a reason why it was in clearence for only $40.
“Why pick this art to sell Homesense whyy??? Original historic faces are just fine! Maybe it’s meant towards some new vibe demographic I’m just not apart of!”
Taking to the comments, art fans were quick to share their thoughts on the piece, with one writing: “WHO buys this rubbish …. Tells you enough”, while another added: “Omg I’ve said this too. Like whyyyyy.”
However, not everyone agreed, with one fan of the artwork writing: “I would actually buy that, sorry! Not for 40 though. And a second fan also complained about the price, rather than the art itself, commenting: “I unironically love it. It has Magritte vibes. I’m not paying $40 for a mass-produced print though.”
A final commenter added: “Well.. at least they sell something that resembles historical art, the stores in my City keep selling the same ugly banana on blank space.”
