Police are urging anyone who was on the A38 at the time of the accident to come forward. The heartbreaking news sparked an outpouring of condolences on social media.

Lily Violet posted: “RIP little one. Condolences to his family.”

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said in a statement: “We are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision on the A38 near Lichfield this morning (7 March).

“We were called to a report of a collision between a car and a child on the A38 at the junction with the A5206 at around 5am. Sadly, the child, a boy aged 7, died at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

“To help with the investigation, the A38 remains closed in both directions between the A5148 and A5 junctions, although this is expected to be reopened shortly.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who was travelling in the area with any information or dashcam footage which could help collision investigators.
