This is the harrowing moment a police van slams into an elderly woman crossing the road – before she was rushed to hospital.
The pensioner, who is in her 80s, was struck by a police van on Rochdale Road in Harpurhey, Manchester, on September 9 at around 10.50am. Dashcam footage, taken from a car on the opposite side of the road, captured the moment the woman appeared to walk out as she attempted to cross before she was struck and sent falling to the ground.
Officers can then be seen rushing out the police car to check on the woman before paramedics were called to the scene. The police van appeared to have mounted the pavement as it attempted to swerve the pedestrian before the crash.
Her injuries were described as ‘minor’ by Greater Manchester Police, reports the Manchester Evening News. The police vehicle was responding to an incident elsewhere when the crash occurred. An investigation is now underway, with a referral made to GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate ‘in line with normal procedure’, the force said.
In a statement issued on Monday, a GMP spokesperson said: “We are currently responding to a collision involving a police vehicle and a pedestrian which happened at 10.50am this morning (Monday 9 September 2024) on Rochdale Road, Manchester. The pedestrian – a woman in her 80s – has been taken to hospital with minor injuries. “In-line with normal procedure, referrals have been made to GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate.”
The crash comes after a 16-year-old girl was killed in a horror motorway collision. Sarah Cain tragically died in hospital on August 31 just two days after a devastating multi-vehicle smash on the A1(M) in West Yorkshire. Two other people remain in hospital and a man has been arrested in connection with the crash, according to police.
Officers were called to reports of a crash on the southbound carriageway near junction 41 just after 12.30pm on Thursday. A Citroen C5 collided with a Kia Niro in lane two of the motorway, police said.
Both vehicles then entered lane one where the Kia, which Sarah was travelling in, collided with a Subaru Outback, which was towing a caravan. Sarah received serious head injuries in the crash and was rushed to hospital, but tragically died of her injuries over the weekend.
A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesperson said previously six ambulances, an air ambulance, a doctor and a critical care paramedic were deployed to the scene. They said three people were taken to Leeds General Infirmary, while another three were taken to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.
